Help with LS/VTEC!!! Please!
I have a complete b18c1...and i wanna do LS/VTEC...what exactly would i have to get and do to run a safe setup. wha exactly do i use from my gsr engine...can sumone please help me out...im new to all this hybrid stuff...and please try to break everything down as easy as u guys can...THANKZ!
an LS /VTEC is basically an LS bottom end with a B16 DOHC VTEC head and intake manifold. to really do it right you will want different rods and pistons that will up the compression as well as change the displacement (from 1.8 to 2.0). My old shop manager has built two of them and they are very strong motors. If you need more info let me know, I will get you in contact with him.
why wouldn't i b able to use my b18 head instead of a b16? and couldn't i just use my gsr pistons and rods? can sumone please enlighten me...still not sure of all this

i would keep building it...already have intake, headerz, exhuast, clutch, and flywheel...but my car wuz makin a really loud rattlin noise...so i just decided to try sumtin new...and since i heard ls/vtec would b a good option since i have most of the parts needed already...just thought it b interestin....but still dunno wha exactly else do i need and wha i can use from the other engine
I agree with the other 2. if you already have a complete b18c1 engine, i would just build that. fixing a small problem is much cheaper than building a whole new engine from scratch.

You heard a rattling noise and thought hey.....maybe i'll just build an ls/vtec now instead. Don't run away from engine problems. If you don't know what's up with it have someone who does check it out and if you do happen to have a loose bottom end then just rebuild that (much better) throw some ctr pistons and new rods in her along with the rest of the plumbing and enjoy the extra power and 12.4 to 1 compression....good luck
ok....guess i'll stick wit the b18c1. it has 160k miles on it thou....pistons n rods will fix that ryte?...or make the mile amount not matter ryte? and if so which really are better for me ctr or itr? wha else would i do to make it last longer besides pistons n rods? sorry im such a noobie lolz
The mileage never matters, only the condition. For high performance applications, you'll end up ditching or replacing about 50% of the components for new OEM or aftermarket replacement parts.
If the manual says "Replace", replace it.
Anything that rotates or reciprocates naturally wears and should be properly reconditioned or replaced.
Any time you separate seals or gaskets, you should replace them. Seals and gaskets deform when loaded and might not seal properly if you reuse them. However, there are certain places where you can reuse them (or use a little Hondabond to help it seal), but better to err on the side of safety and simply replace them.
If you are on the fence as to whether a part needs to be replaced, replace it.
That's the general jist of it.

i ve got lsvtec in my hatch and i used a b18c1 head. i' ve race other lsvtecs with b16 head and beat them. also the it dynos better with b18c1 head. so i say just use what you got. it will be fast and fun.
If you have the B18C1 head, then you will miss out on the ITR IM. But if you are going to get something else, then oh well.
But building a LS/VTEC properly takes a lot of work and time, and if you are going to avoid the problems in your current motor, then you shouldn't even go with the hybrid because of its reliability... Stick with your motor, fix it and call it a day.
And stop letting your friends tell you what you should do with your car!!

why dont you just resleeve the gsr to 2L and put in new pistons? It will make the same amount of torque as the 2L lsvtec and you will be able to rev it higher w/o the cylinder walls cracking over time. Not to mention the cost would be around the same as building a reliable 2l lsvtec/crvtec. And best of all your block will still be stamped with a b18c1 and no one will no you have a 2L. Keeps away theives who think you have a crazy built motor
