Default Engine Rebuilding questions

For all you guys that have done rebuilding work on your engines... what kind of information did you collect before you went ahead with the rebuild? I'm thinking about buying some books and reading up before attempting to do anything, just so I know what I'm getting myself into and so I know what kind of parts and tools I'm gonna need. And can rebuilding work be done in my garage, or does it need to be taken to a professional location? Thanks.

You can do pretty much everything at home except taking the pistons off of the rods. You need these tools:

Sockets 3/8" and 1/2" drive sockets 10mm-19mm and one big socket for your axle nuts, I think it's 27mm, not sure.
Screwdrivers, long, short, philips, flat.

If using cheap tools(craftsman, harbor freight, husky, etc.) you need: Three 3/8" ratchets, and two 1/2" ratchets

Wrenches long and short 12mm-19mm

Pry Bar, breaker bar

Feeler Guages

Maybe some silicon sealant

Oil, Coolant

Jack stands

Hydraulic jack, please don't be a fool and use a scissorjack.

Food, Drink, and Friends

It's nice to have an air compressor and some pneumatic tools, but you can do without.

What's the big diff between the two manuals? I got the Haynes right now, but I have yet to use it cus it's too damn cold to do anything.

I just got my helms last week. I have never seen such detail and information all in one place before. I find myself looking at it just for fun. The haynes manual is fine for little stuff, but for any type of complex work or real troubleshooting then helms is th eway to go.
