Negative battery terminal?

Default Negative battery terminal?

I really don't mean to sound too stupid, but why would you need to connect anything to the negative terminal on your battery? I apologize if this seems so simple, but I guess I don't understand the idea. Thanks

to complete the circuit of whatever your powering/wiring you need a positive (+) and a ground (-)

But why use the battery as the ground? Couldn't you just use a good chasis ground?

the battery cable is grounded to the chassis to begin with...
