Default quietest muffler 2.5-3"

I have a 98 US ITR with a jrsc. I'm upgrading my exhaust system, but I want to stay as quiet as possible. I know that quiet=backpressure, but I am looking for a compromise. This is my daily driver, and, unfortunately, I have to sacrifice some performance in order to maintain a professional appearance. So I'm looking for something that flows better than stock with a reasonable sound. I don't mind it getting a little loud when I stomp it.

I'm thing about buying a used system I've seen listed for sale. It has the kamikaze header (2.5" collector and downpipe) that most people recommend for the jrsc. It has 3" mandrel bent piping, a testpipe and turbo thermal exhaust. Wouldn't that be a little too loud for what I want? How much louder will it be from just removing the cat? I think I can get by with the testpipe here, but I need to know how much of a difference that will make in the sound. What is the quietest muffler I could use to tone it down and still receive reasonable power gains?

I've searched some and I know that testpipes can also be smelly. Anyone have any recommendations for a free flow cat if I decide to go that way? I've been seeing a lot of posts saying that carsounds don't last very long.

3" thermal will be incredibly loud.
i would stay with a 2.5" system.

I have yet to hear one in person, but many owners of the SMS 2.5" cat-back claim that the sound level is near stock.

I agree with SgT. A thermal 3" with testpipe will be very loud.. I've heard Magnaflow makes some very good mufflers in 2.5" and 3" and also low key and quiet. Ask Dave at SMSP for your application, he can help you..
Good luck..

what about the test pipe and the stock muffler, woud that help increase his flow and minimize noise?

In a couple of weeks I should have some new 2-1/2" resonators to show you guys. They will also be available in 3" in/out with a 4-1/2" diameter body, so they will fit nicely in the tunnel.

if quiet is your main concern i would go with mugen, smsp, or the hytech twinloop. everything else is going to be loud. My setup is very loud, but with a silencer it's almost like stock.

A few people I've spoken to have mentioned silencers. What exactly are they? Are they able to reduce the noise without increasing back pressure or are they just an easily removable street to strip application.

I have a kamikaze header, testpipe and 3" thermal exhaust on my JRSC R and its EXTREAMLY LOUD!! I'm taking louder then practically anything. People compaire the loudness of my car to that of pro all motor cars with just a open header. However the more power you make the louder the exhaust will be.
I would stick with a exhaust setup with a cat and a normal exhaust.
Trust me the the setup I have is horribly loud. I can't even hit VTEC on public roads for fear that cops will hear me miles away and track me down. Ask anyone who had heard my car and they will say its stupid loud. For this reason I rarley drive the car anymore.

Mugens are quiet, Gracity got one and i heard it, kinda sounds like stock
Thermals are loud becuase no resonators. and 3 in not needed unless your Fi .

silencers(butt plugs) just kinda like cut dfown the ID of the outlet of the muffler and cuts down drastically on soudn and performance . I put mine on once and tok it off a block later.

a silencer decreases diameter of exhaust, - but doesn't reduce much of the noise in most cases, i had a silencer for 5zigen muffler and it didn't make much difference...

i thought of the following,

lets say i got 2.5" piping, instead of using 2.5" straight through muffler, would i still have as free flowing exhaust if i used a larger diameter (3") turbo muffler?

hey i have a GSR with the Apex WS exhaust and a jdm header/test pie...and its not 2 loud..u can hear the lower rumble at idle or low rpm's, but like after 3.5 rpm gets really quiet all the way up until 1st manifold runners open up, and of course vtec is pretty loud .But basically after about 4 rpm u cant really hear the exhaust.i got my whole exhaust brand new for like 389.25 shipped! im me or email me if you want to know where.
