Default so i checked the dip stick on my car today...

every oil change (with mobil1), I make sure that the oil is somewhere between the 2 dots on the dipstick.

As I was filling gas today the oil has decreased the the bottom of the lower dot on the dipstick.... ****.. whats going on?

how many miles are on your car? have you noticed any smoke in your rear view above 6500 rpms? could be a lot of things or as stated above, did you let the oil settle before checking the level?

whenever i change my oil i fill it up to the top dot. start the car, let the oil circulate for 5 mins or so. then i recheck the level(usually it goes down) then add more to the top dot. I just check my oil yesterday, and its still at the top dot(its been 5k miles since i changed it). I dont hit vtec a lot either.

You're either burning oil or you have a leak. Is your valve train really loud?

sup.. my car has around 80k now.. im very good to my car.. I dont drive my car hard at all. The only time I engage vtec is usually on freeway on ramps.. other than that I dont. I also use 5w-30. maybe I should check again when i get home cuz the gas station was slightly uneven ... but would it make that much of a difference? damn im worried. Im not aware of any leaks. or black smoke released from the rear.

I guess ill do an oil change soon

You need to check it on a level surface and check it when the motor is cold.

is it because 10w-30 is thicker? whats the difference between the two oils? what would be the cause of "burning" oil.. is this normal?

Bingo ! It takes at least 5 or 10 min of the oil to settle. In fact, that's a good reason to not let Jiffy Lube or anyone else change the oil. I let a shop change the oil in my old G1 teg and they overfilled it by more than a quart. They probably just kept filling it until it reached the top dot on the dipstick, not waiting for it to settle for a correct reading.

talk about car basics. anyone who can't figure out why their car was low on oil after just driving around and pullin up to a gas station, not realizing that the oil is still all over the engine and dripping into the pan. stupidity at its best.

Those places don't let the oil drain out nearly long enough either. When I do mine I usually pull the drain plug and go have dinner, sex, or something else that takes 2hrs+. They do a wham bam job and you end up keeping allot more of the dirty oil with you when you drive away with a lighter wallet.

Be nice. Some people just don't think of this stuff.

The advantage of 10w30 over 5w30 is that it uses less viscosity index improvers, so it's more shear stable, scores a higher HTHS number, a better Noack number and you'll typically burn less oil with 10w30 than 5w30, especially in the LS1. A lot of guys have come to me with advice on what to do about their oil burning LS1s, and when I tell them to switch from 5w30 to 10w30 they will often come back a few weeks later and tell me their consumption is greatly reduced or eliminated.

sounds stupid, but make sure the car is on level ground. Even a small incline can throw your reading off.
