Default Howebrew Air Intake

I think I read somewhere that if you are making a home made air intake that you are not suppose to use PVC pipe or other types of plastic pipe. If this is so, please let me know why.

(BTW-I have an AEM CAI, I'm just curious about this)

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, But when pvc gets hot it releases toxic fumes or some ****... It would look like **** anyway.

yes he is correct about the toxi fumes. You do not want toxi fumes being fed into your motor would you?

use some 2.5 inch steel pipe.!

Sometimes it's not about looks.

I started this thread and I hadn't even thought about this... I built a snorkel for my Suzuki Samurai out of ABS pipe years ago and it works fine, no problems with fumes or the pipe breaking apart or anything.

Maybe ABS pipe would be safer to use than PVC?

I bought a u-bent 2.5" pipe at JC Whitney for $25. Works as good as the AEM and looks spiffy painted. Filter gets dirty faster down in the fender well though. Gonna try a cold-air short ram intake next

i know there was a H-U-G-E thread in the integra forum over a year ago about using PVC for intake material. the concensus was that the intake doesn't get hot enough for the PVC to release the toxic fumes.

i still would stay away from PVC b/c i am too conservative.

Well, I really wanted to know in case I can sell my CRX or trade it for something else. If that is the case then I probably won't have a lot of money left for little mods, like an air intake. For a temporary solution I would consider building my own, but maybe I'll use ABS plastic, I like the look of black better anyway.

Reason is if you turn on the air and its not on recirculate it will send in fumes. It's the same reason as if you have an exhaust manifold leak.

Seems to me it would take a lot of heat to release the toxic gasses of PVC. A couple weeks ago when it snowed I made a sled and the runners were mad out of 3" PVC pipe, I brought them in the house and heated them over the stove till nice and warm and then bent the ends up at an angle. Sure I got some fumes, but I didn't die, plus it took a lot... I mean A LOT of heat to get them warm enough to bend/smell.
