Default vtec engagement not right

I've got a 95 gsr w/ K&N air intake, 00 type r lower exhaust manifold, straight pipe in place of cat, and a Thermal cat back exhaust off the same 00 type r the manifold came from.

My problem is some times the vtec seems to kick in kinda soft at 4500rpm and then hit home at the usual 57-5800rpm. but some times it won't kick in at all.

What could be causing this? is there any way to check the solenoid? could fuel pressure be an issue. I had a 95 delsol w/ a b16 and it was loud and proud when it hit vtec but this car is just kinda soft and the power boost isn't there.

I think that you are confusing the dual-stage intake manifold with v-tec engagement. GSR's have a dual-stage intake manifold that kicks in about 4000rpm-4500rpm, and then vtec hits about 6krpm. this helps out tourque curves and also gives the highly known two dips in the power band of a GSR as shown on by most dyno graphs. These things have alot of factors as far as how it sounds, too many to name.

But if you think that you are having a problem with VTEC engagment make sure that you check out oil pressure first.

vtec=4,400
secondaries=5,700

vtec needs at least 50psi of oil pressure and at correct operating tempature...there is a way to test the solenoid, try a search on this topic and you'll find alot more info...i've seen some good topics on this in the past

sorry snoball, but you do have it totally backwards...the gsr hits vtec at 4400 and secondaries open around 5700...the itr and si's hit vtec at 5500ish because they are single stage..

vtec @ 4400
Secondary @ 5600~5700
I have the same car and nearly same setup as you.

Test your ECU, i can almost guarantee you are throwing a #22 CEL
check out http://www.c-speedracing.com on how to test your ECU and for what the codes mean.

I havent fixed mine yet, if you find a fix pleae direct me to it. thanks.

If VTEC is not enguaging I would check your oil level, make sure your not low.

VTEC is not a sudden increase it power, it just continues making power at the higher rpms, you shouldn't feel anything. If you do feel a sudden change in power then you have your engaugment set wrong.

my oil level is correct, i check it way too often. What are secondaries? I have never heard of secondaries on a gsr. I realize the intake is designed differently than a si or type r.And you guys are tellin' me the vtec kicks in at 4500 or 5700 rpm? you can deffinitly hear and feel a differance at 4500 but its not anything to brag about, but at 5700 rpm it lets you know something happened (when and if it engages)

thanks for the replys

I know about both of these things. Both the Prelude SH and the GSR have dual-stage intake manifolds, so I as now stand corrected, when VTEC kicks in at 4500rpm or so it feels kinda like a limp dick, but I know what you mean when it hits 6grand and you feel like your turbo finally spooled up(just for dramatization, please don't take that comment to it's potential). I have the same thing in my GSR, I think IMO that it mainly to keep a good streetable feel unlike the type R and the Civic Si which feels like nothing until Six grand.

Sorry to everyone who has corrected me I guess I was just wrong.

The GSR has VTEC come in, then the secondaries later. The power is more linear than a b16 or b18c5. You won't necessarily feel or hear it as much because of this, but the power is there...and more predictable.

i check the oil every morning before starting the car. car dosn't use a drop of oil in a 3000mile oil change cycle. so i know the oil level is good

just get your facts straight before you make it sound like you know something...do a search, you'll find good info!

why the hell would you check your oil every morning? That's going overboard, especially since you say it doesn't use a drop of oil.
