sheet metal dash
Where have people been getting their material from? How did you guys manage to make the bend(the bend that comes straight down onto the steering wheel) for the dash...
you can get aluminum from any local metal works shop. Some might even be able to roll the bend for you. Just look in your phone book.

I thought the nhra rules say that you have to have something representing a dash? We wanted to do away with the dash as well, but couldn't because of the rules. We always used the aluminum one from jegs before, but now we've got a custom fiberglass one.
Yeah, it is in the rule book that you have to have a dash. Seems like they dont really inforce it. I personally like the dash. Makes things look neat and makes for a great place to mount a cup holder. We have a carbon fiber unit in ours. Its a single layer and starting to get a little smote up on top of it from the sun I think.

i guess a piece of metal or plexiglass big enough to house all your gauges is considered a dash. everyone interprits the rules differently. they dont get into dimensions in the rule book.
I actually just fabricated a dash this weekend for a friends dodge dart. if you are looking to save weight deffinitely use aluminum. we used steel cause the dash was already made of steel. and were more conderned with a custom tach mount and gauge locations. plus we plan to do all the body work, and paint it when we spray the car.
you can problably get away with using rivets if you are not equiped to weld aluminum (heli arc).
I would look into getting a brake to make the bends, (we could have used one ourselves). I will try and post a pic of the dash we did if you are interested?

A dash is required by NHRA Hot Rod rules. Trying to keep a "finished" appearance inside the cars. Might have seen some cars with less than a dash last year, NHRA was allowing a "one race grace" on things like that. Be a good idea to call or email Jeff Giovino at jgiovino@nhra.com.

I will try and snap a shot tommorow, but I dont have image hosting (dont even know how to do it), but I will try...
we basically sealed up the top vents and speaker grill. then cut out the middle (where the supports for the radio, and instrument pannel was. then we welded a 3 inch piece of sheet metal across the underside of the top. then we measured a piece to go from the bottom of where the instrument pannel used to be, to the back of the plate on the top, to get the angle up. for the tach pod we cut a piece that angles twards the driver on the right side of the steering wheel. it is also angled back a little more than the main dash surface. we just kept measuring, and trimming it til it was the way we wanted it. this weekend we are going to start doing the dura glass, and plastic (bondo) work. then we are going to paint it the color of the car (orange pearl w/silvery metalic) it should be pretty hot. we are adding problably 8 to 10 lbs with all the metal and body work, but the finish should have some deffinite cool factor, plus the 500 plus inch big block going in after paint more than make up for it
he is looking at a low 10 sec. street driven drag car when he is done
if he can get 575 horses to the ground with only a mini tub, and no four link
