Things to look for when buying a B16a1 Engine, Tranny, Ecu
Hey All.
I will be purchasing a B16 pretty soon, and picking it up myslef (no shipping) so that I can hand pick it! Anyhow, what things should I be on the look out for ie; sensors, common problems? I will be picking something that LOOKS mint, and clean. I'll probably remove the valve cover, and take a look in there. Any other suggestions??
Thanx

you can't always go by how clean the outside is. they should all be pressure washed anyway, so that will be a hard way to tell. i would suggest pulling the valve cover and looking for wear on the cams, and more importantly, brown, caked on oil residue. if there is a lot of dark brown oil stains, chances are the motor has been pushed really hard before. look at the valve spring retainers, to see if it looks like any have been replaced from a bent valve. be sure to push on the middle rocker arm (vtec arm) and feel the tension of the lost motion assemblies. these are what the middle rocker arm pushes on when not in vtec.
in the trans, put your fingers into the diff and try to wiggle it by hand, if the trans is in neutral, it should move around without too much hassle. just make sure it doesn't have excessive play, as in the diff carrier bearings are shot. good luck.

just look out for broken stuff sensors ect..., make sure you get the rear mounting bracket (mine came cut) if yours is make sure they take some $$ of or get you a uncut one, watch out for damaged dist (there $$$) you can pull the valve cover and look but it won't tell you much. most of the time there pretty good. check the T belt, make sure it's not broken. dented or crushed pan.... can't think of much more. if it looks like it's been dropped, it's prolly no good. everything else you should replace, oil/water pump, valve cover gasket, i replaced both manifold gaskets when i put mine in, makes it easier for cleaning. if you mean a first gen b16 you want a pr3 or pwo ecu, hasport sub-harness, mounts, s1 or j1 tranny, go to hasport.com they tell you everything.
Bring a friend who has a compression tester, or, have the shop test it. That should give you an overall idea on what condition the motor is in.
