Default Tranny problems

I have a 95 accord LX with AEM CAI. Whenever the rpms hit around 4500-5000 i hear this loud ringing noise. Some say its the tranny which is damaged...? I have almost 74K on the engine. How much would it cost to covert to manual? Thanks.

Its like a loud humming noise. When I reach around the 4000+ RPM it starts. It is very audible. Im not sure how else I can decribe it. But doesnt sound too good...

Oh as for location, its coming fromt the engine area... Sorry I dont know how to be more specific. Its just a loud ringing/humming noise that starts and stays until i lower my RPM's.

Most likely it's the heat shield on the exhaust system, the bolts rust thru and then a rattle develops... you could take it off if you wanted. Next time the car is cool check the heat sheild and see if it has any play in it, it shouldn't. Good luck

But that would be a rattling noise right? This noise I am experiencing is like a loud humming, not even close to a rattle. I will try and check tomm tho. Thanks.

i've seen people with the same problem.. it ended up being they were very low on gear lube in the trany. If you keep driving it like that you will end up messing something up.. so i would suggest getting it checked soon..

... have you considered the possibility that it is simply normal engine noise, which peaks in that range since peak torque kicks in around 4000-4500 rpm, and peak HP ranges are around 5000rpm?

without a stock resonator (since u have an AEM CAI), the hum is much more noticeable.

The noise that the heat sheild makes is less of a rattle sound to me, almost sounds like, well not to get really graphic but like someone passing gas. It is the strangest noise from inside the car, and from outside it sounds a little more like a rattle. Just my .02.

People outside my car have noticed it. They make fun of my accord Hmm mabye because they drive Si's and I cant smoke em... But the point is that it really doesnt sound normal. The noise has nothing to do with metal rattling, its like the noise in the movies when like some plane is about to break the sound barrier. I know it sounds corny but im trying to give everyone a good idea. Its a loud humming noise. Thank you all for your thoughtful replies!

Do you really think that you would be able to hear the noise from a system on the outside of your car.

is it definately RPM related? or is it possibly speed related? could be a wheel bearing if it is speed related. I would describe a bad whhel bearing as more of a humming but its hard to describe sounds on the internet it would change tone or pitch when you were in high speed turns, like an exit ramp

It is RPM related because it only comes around 4-5K. And I dont have any hook ups for installing a new tranny, mabye next year when I goto college if my car lasts, I will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering and they should give me access to all the tools. And then I can mabye swap to manual! I guess this problem wont be solved. Its weird that no one else has had this.

It could also be the bearing in the transmission. There is a bearing inside the transmission where the driveaxle connects. It would be a pretty uncommon failure, but it could happen.

I'd stock out your car one day...put the factory intake back on and see if the noise goes away. Did your car do this before the AEM CAI? There might be something about the install of the AEM (loose / a flap of metal hitting metal at certain engine vibrations / punched lip of metal 'catching air' as it goes by / the list goes on and on).

Alternatively, with that kind of whine, it might be your alternator's bearings going bad if it's so speed related. Although with 76k, that's kinda low. What's the tag on your alternator? "Denso" or is it a freakin' God-Damn GM-sourced "AC-Delco" unit?

I've never heard an auto-tranny make noises since it's just one big hydraulic pump. They just stop working with low-fluid.
