Default jdm engines dont have a crank sensor?

this guy at work tells me that if i use a jdm itr engine (2000) with a p28 , that my p28 will throw a code beacuase a p28 looks for a crank sensor, and the jdm itr doesn't have a crank sensor

but then ive heard that the jdm itr engine is 100% plug and play if you have the obd2>obd1 harness and a p28
