Turbo questions.
I am hopefully getting 2k or so back on my tax return. I was planning on doing an LS/VTEC because I knew I could afford it and it would be fun. But my real passion is to turbo my LS. I just want to know how much I can get a good turbo kit for. But funds are a little tight so as cheap as possible without it being some hunk of **** turbo would be best. If anyone could help me out that would be great. What internals do I want, or should I just get a 30,000 mile LS block?
hey g. i have a LS block myself... i was originally going to go LS/VTEC but it's gonna cost way too much and if ur not careful u can damage ur whole engine. First off the block work it self would be about 1200, that's tearing it down and boring out and reenforcing the cylinder walls. The head plus the parts would cost around 2000, thats assuming u want the best parts like type r pistons and such. The LS block oil pump is too weak to work optimum level with the VTEC head. This whole setup is not recommened by tuners and enthusiats. Look this up online and you'll see the whole technical aspect. In my opinion, this is just a trend that'll fade within time. LS blocks are really good. I, myself is tight on funds aswell, so i would go with a Greddy turbo kit, after taxes. email me ( ernald711@aol.com ) and give me some up dates. maybe we could give eachother some help. i'm in the same boat as you, cause i wanted to go LS/VTEC, but now i want a GREDDY.
All of your turbo kits are gonna be arooooound $3k, but you'll always end up spending more than that for little parts here and there that don't come with a kit. Since you don't seem to know much about turbos I'd suggest not putting together a custom kit because this requires quite a bit of knowledge about what you're doing to get it done right. I suggest reading the FI forum a lot and doing research on what works and what doesn't, and what you'll need to get going. Also try to find some good deals.
As far as the greddy kit I don't personally like it because a) the base kit has no intercooler (bad bad bad bad) and b) the turbo is pretty small (bad, but not a huge deal, and not just for power reasons). To each his own though.

I know a couple of people with tegs that ran LS/VTEC with a stock bottom end and were spanking the **** out of GSR's, and they had their engines for like 2 years taking it to redline like everyday.
use the money and rebuild the block and sleeve it before you get turbo. It's better if you have these pumps changed also (water, fuel, oil) and thicker headgasket etc.
I got mine fully built with all parts and labor for $6k
