Whats the best Headunit?
That's kind of like saying, "What's the best car?"
I'm happy to help, but first I need to know your budget, and what qualities you are looking for in a head unit.
Flashy display?
Excellent radio reception?
CDR/RW playback?
How many preouts?
Built-in EQ?
Cd Changer Controller?
Alarm built in?
etc.
Let me know, and I'll hook you up.

I'd like to know what's the best HU I can get and this is what I'm looking for...
Nice display
Ability to tuck away so I don't have to detach the face plate and carry it with me.
Some sort of security feature so that it can't be used if stolen
rich bass
ability to upgrade in the future if necessary...for amps etc...
CD/Tuner of course no cassette necessary...

Aside from not playing recorded cds well, my eclipse 4 volt works great, with good features. Actually, Clarion, Alpine, Nakamichi highest level Pioneers are very good, just to name a few.........Budget is the determining factor, look for a new friend at good guys.....
ok first off im not a stereo guy and i dont know it all i have just worked around them in the past. The only company i know of that offers a :

Is the kenwood. It has the mask feature one some of the higher end units. THe Sony offers a headunit that when in the off position looks completely black but i dont know the model number. JVC has the El cameleon (sp.) that hides it operation buttons when off as well. I think they are all pretty cool but could be just another thing to break.
As far as the Ability not to be operated if stolen , that would go to eclipise. Im again not sure of the details but here is what i think i remember. The Eclipise units require you to insert a Cd when first installing them...any CD. What it does it "learns that CD's particular time length and track count and stores it to permenent memory. If you were to disconect the battery you would be prompted to reinsert that same CD (so you have to keep it, cant get rid of it when the group goes out of style) and insert it back into the CD player for it to operate normally. What that means to a theif is that unless he/she is physic and knows which CD brings that deck back to life then its unsless to them.
My suggestion to you is revaluate your tastes and interestes in music and what you are wanting to spend and what you want to build. If you are looking just to replace your headunit for a nice CD player and will probably never do more then that except maybe getting a sub and an amp then there is no reason to spend tons of money. But if you honestly see yourself putting together either over time or right away a moderatly complex system ....ie component speakers, multiple amps, maybe an EQ, then its worth (trust me) to spend allittle extra coin on a headunit with all the bells and whistles. remember that is the brains of your system.
One other thing, if you have a particular brand that you prefer, stick with it. Dont let others tell you that its junk. Alot of this stuff does come down to personal preference. Most every company makes a premeium line that will for sure do nicely. Good luck bro

The eclipse does have the anti theft thing. You can use it or disable it. Choose a CD as a key then keep it as your code when the battery goes out, or when you have to reset the ecu from mods.
i wanted something with the bells and whistles but good quality as well. How is kenwood? I'm not too familiar with their audio equipment. As for Sony- I don't know- I looked at the unit- and it didn't really fold out too well for when I'm driving. And from what I read- nobody likes JVC.
I don't think I'll go too complicated...but I like things that move and hide for security.

the kenwood units are very nice expecially the exceleron line. That is there premieum level stuff and i think its top knotch. You wont be disapointed if you decide to go with something like that.

I have the JVC El Kameleon KD-LX30. It's great. It plays burned cds very well, it becomes totally black so it is hidden, it has subwoofer preouts and built in controls, the display is very easy to see...tons of great things.
JVC=Just Very Cool
