Default fuel pump safety

I replaced my fuel pump on a 91 crx dx a while back. But it's been buggin me for a while... I noticed the fuel pump wire connections are placed inside the fuel tank and are held in place by tiny 8mm nuts and a couple washers. The only protection i saw were plastic tabs that cover the top, but not completely.

What would happen if one of the wires came loose? Wouldnt that create a spark or is there not enough current to do that? Are all hondas designed this way? I watched some car show and GMs have their pump outside of the tank. I realize it must be very safe otherwise there'd be cars blowin up but what if someone installed it improperly or didnt torque to spec, it's an unnerving thought to me.
