I've got a 98 Base 5spd with about 68K. I bought it certified used from a dealer at 25K 2 years ago. I learned how to drive 5 spd on this car.
Here's the problem. Abot a couple of days ago, I noticed that my clutch had very little resistance. I thought it was maybe because I was driving around my new toy (89 Cherokee 5spd with a LOT heavier clutch) a lot lately so I just "lost touch" with my lude. I was still able to drive it around fine. The ony problem was when I was stopped at a red light, it was really hard to put it in gear.
Just to day, I decided to take it out for a spin since it was sunny out (but still freezing) and I have not driven it for a couple of days. When I got in, the first thing I noticed was that the clutch had no resistance at all. I started the engine and with a little hesitation, started. But it is idling at 1K (usually starts at 2K especially when it is cold). I thought it was a bit weird so I pumped the gas a couple of times. Still idiling at 1K. Weird. I stepped on the clutch and the other foot on the brake, I let the parking brake go. Then I let the brake foot go. The car started rolling forward by it self (the gear was in 1st). Mind you, my foot was and still is on the cllutch pedal and no foot on the gas. I never released the clutch pedal. Also, if the car was to roll byitself, it should have rolled backwards since my driveway has a bit of a slope to it. I felt a little freaked out so I shut the car off here I am typing away.
I looked by the firewall in the drivers side right by where the clutch pedal comes out of. There is the hole where the clutch pedal comes out of then about half an inch beneath it, there is this white round plastic thing. There was slight sign of leakage from that plastic thing. Does this mean that my master/slave cylinders are bad? And if so, what is involved in fixing it? All I have are a bunch of hand tools. Also does this mean that i need to replace my clutch?

after some more research, seems like I may need to replace the clutch master/slave cylinders. Any instructions on changing them? Is it hard? Any special tools?

Dude, that is the SAME problem I have with my 92 Si. Did the shifter get stuck in first?? Mine did and the only way I could get it out was to turn the car off and slightly row the shifter to get it out of gear. Yeah, it was freaky to have a stick car act like an automatic.
The thing is it woudl get stuck in first and I would have to drive in first until I could pull over and turn the car off. A few times it even locked me out of being able to put it in gear too.
I heard that my clutch mster cylinder is leaking so I hope that cures the problem.
The only difference is that my clutch pedal is stiff.
I already have my clutch master and slave cylinders ready to be installed.

thanks for the reply and the link. Yeah, I could not get my gear out of first unless I turned the car off. I did make an appointment with the dealer for later this week but I was not too sure about bringing it in in case they don't cover it under warranty and charge me a fortune for it.
Where did you say you found the parts cheap?
