Default noob question: how do you know when...,

your water pump is going? my car was over heating the other night AND i had no heat through the vents. is this a bad water pump?

could be, check the thermostat and make sure thats working. check the coolant level, see if the fan is coming on when its supposed too. Make sure you do the needed maintanance when the factory says so. If not, that could leed to problems..
