Default It's time to switch ... I think I'm going to run the AFC "hack" =\

I'm running the GReddy SOHC kit on my '97 EX, and I'm getting sick and tired of the blue box. It causes me too many headaches. After reading the "hack" archives for like an hour, I think I'm going to switch over. . . .

Here will be my new fuel setup:

*RC Engineering 440 cc injectors (wherever I can find them cheapest)
*A'PEXi VAFC (jdmspecperf.com)
*Walbro 255 lph HP fuel pump (already installed)
*Holley bolt-on FPR (checkerauto.com)

Sounds good? I'll also be getting dyno tuned at 5 psi to make everything run nice and smoothly. Man, I swore to myself that no more money would be invested into my car. Goddamn thing's a never-ending money pit. . . .

Tis better to invest just a little now in fuel upgrades, then a whole motor rebuild later.

are you partial to rc's because they're saturated? if not, you would save yourself some money by getting the dsm 450's and a resistor box...i got mine completely rebuilt w/ box, and lifetime warranty from MikePalm for 125 good stuff, just a thought to save you some bread!

yeah, i might go ahead and get the DSM 450s. I knew it was an option, and i'm definitely not partial to RC Eng. whatever works works, so i might just get the DSMs with a resistor box.

If you want to save money first of all pick up some used 450cc injectors from thepartstrader.com or dsmtrader.com. Then buy an SMC for $100 from zip, a MAP limiter circuit board from me for $21, or go to radioshack and buy a 10K ohm pot for $2. They all do basically the same thing since most people run a constant across the board fuel cut of -35% or so with 450cc injectors.

If you want gnats *** fuel tuning then the AFC is the way to go.

Try saving a little bit of money and then buy hondata, with good tuning their are less chances of blowing your motor too, and you can always use hondata.

if you mean the PITA of nothaving a running car while you scour the ends of the earth to find someone who can tune it and then give him your first born son to do so then sure i guess its worth the PITA

LOL! Well, i was going to go with a Hondata, but the head technician told me he doesn't want to tune a Hondata. so that was out of the question. Then, i asked about the AEM EMS, and they were really enthusiastic about me wanting that -- more money for htem -- but my financial situation just doesn't allow it. with the hack setup, everything plus dyno time is as much as just the EMS itself. It may not do as much, but it'll be good enough since I'm only running 5 psi ... maybe 7 later down the road.

Tuning Hondata is much easier then tuning AEM. And with hondata you will start like a stock honda.

I actually found much better driveability with the blue box over the SMC. I can't run 10 psi on the bluebox like I was with the SMC but I can run up to 7-growing-on-8. I wouldn' t go selling or throwing out the blue box yet. You might come back to it like I did. I'm just living on the blue box till the hondata gets to me. You can save your money that way.

My vote is definately for the SMC. It does basically the EXACT same thing as the AFC hack but for less than half the price. By the way filetofit, what is your MAP limiter circuit board? what is it and what does it do exactly?

Hondata

You can always learn to tune it yourself.

They want a lot of money for their ECU's, but I think they have a better box for additional injectors than ERL.

The MAP limiter circuit works on the same principle as the SMC or AFC hack. It reduces the voltage that the ECU sees so that you can run larger injectors with boost. The way in which it does this is different than the other two methods. It applies a scale factor to the MAP voltage, and that scale factor varies depending on the vacuum/pressure in the manifold. There are two adjustments, the percent fuel cut at idle and the percent fuel cut at WOT. In between throttle positions are a linear interpolation, so for example if idle was a -20% cut and WOT was a -40% cut then half throttle would be a -30% cut.

You can see a picture and circuit layout at http://www.angelfire.com/ab7/diymaplimiter

Also do an archive search for: filetofit, maplimiter, or circuitboard there are a few posts floating around that discuss the pros and cons.

Are larger injectors a must with hondata? If so, can DSM 450's and a box be used or do you need RC's?
