Default black soot on spark plugs?

i was wondering if this is the normal condition for spark plugs to have carbon all over them, all my plugs are pretty dark/powdery. used the NGK faq and none of the pics match mine. Everything is running fine, just wondering if this is normal.

thanks,
mike
