tach fluctuation
i ve got a 92 prelude with the 2.2 sohc and 5 spd manual. lately ive been having problems with the needle on the tach jumping after shifting gear. there is no lose of power or clutch slippage that i can tell. everything seems to be fine . it does not do it when im not in gear and rev the motor only while driving. normally does it in second when i slow down and then begin to take back off. 3rd, 4th and 5th it jumps around between 2500 to 4000 rpm anything above its fine. any help or ideas would be great.

Mine does it only at idle and it jumps real quickly. Sometimes I think im imagining it. Weard huh? I have a Modex connector on my tach wires so I can take it off and I figured that was the problem. Im connected to the tach wire where it goes in to the ecu and direct battery (as close as it gets) and ground.
take your car to a shop that calabrates them. tach's needles work based on the spring that is inside the gauge. accellerate more and the cable to the tach is pulled more. pulling the spring inside, which in turn moves the tach. if you get a weak spot on the spring (normal wear and tear causes this) then it is time to get it either fixed or replaced. it is not something that you can do yourself, unless you are certified to cal them. other than that... live with it.

what if any other problems would an igniter cause. say something like shutting the car off when its hot and then it not wanting to start right after. albeit this happens only intermitently and the car will always start after a few seconds but not always immediately after i shut it off. and it never stalls or just shuts off.

My stock tach doesen't do it but I have notice a little bobble in the idle every once in a while. Im wondering about possible ground problems but it hasen't bothered me enough to spend the time sourcing the problem. I have other problems that warrant my attention. Thanks for the idea though. When you say ignitor do you refer to the little plug-in box inside the distributor or the coil?

I agree with jeff. I had the same type of problem, and also thought my gauge was bad. I traced the wire from the gauge to the distributor(its like the only blue wire coming off the dist btw), borrowed and aftermarket tach from a friend and spliced it in. That working tach showed the same fluctuations so I immediately knew it couldn't be the tach in my dash. I pulled off the distributor cap and rotor and traced that wire to a lose connector. This problem had been driving me nuts and it was just a loose wire. I would say to test your tach signal coming off the dist. with another tach before you go dumping money to a mechanic or garage to tear apart my dash and put in a new gauge etc. Use the simple process of elimination to find out whats going on. Hope this helps!
I also agree with the igniter problem, possible poor connections to the igniter, or it might be going bad. so if you come out to your car one day and it dont start, and you check for spark and you arent getting any, thats most likely your problem
if its an aftermarket tach then its a wiring problem.. they are prone to interferiance when not wired correctly.. about 3 ro 4 years ago i had a pivot tach that did it and its because the connector i used sucked.. i have noticed it in other cars as well
