Default Three problems, advise please.

Ok, so I own a 93 Prelude Si, as stated in my signature. So far everything has been peachy, other than 3 problems I've encountered. Here they are;

1) The headlights work great, but occasionaly go off without warning. I think it's the relay under the hood, which is a cheap replacement.. but have any of you had this problem?

2) Last night my "Brake Light Lamp" light on the dash came on. I checked the tail lamps and brake lamps, both seem to be ok. Any ideas?

3) After a decent drive, I smell oil. There was no oil on the ground, and no oil on the top near anything noticeable. But, when placed on a rack we could see oil all around the transmission and bottom of the block. It dosent leak to the ground, so we assume it's being burnt off by the exhaust.. hence smelling it and not seeing it. We think it's the rear main seal, but that really needs to be my last option since thats not an easy replacement. I already bought the seal package since its cheap, but doing the labor is going to be hell. Any ideas?

Thanks guys,

Sean

2. When one of my brake lights went out it really was a bitch to tell b/c there were 2 or 3 bulbs in there. Check again or at night to be absolutely certain that you don't have a bad bulb.
3. Get some simple green and clean the bottom of the block and tranny, so you can locate exactly where the oil is coming from.

I dunno this may help but on some other cars one of the filaments in the bulb might be out. Because the brake light bulbs have two filaments. One turn on when the headlights are one and the other turns on when you step on the brakes. My suggestion is to have someone sit in the driver seat and you look behinf have them turn on the headlights and then step on on the brakes. And see if that is the problem. Also have look at the owners manual? Hope it solves that problem. Good luck!

My 2cents on this one, I would think that if your rear main seal you would know. 1st. If it is a std tranny you would be having problems with the clutch slipping. If it's and Auto, you should see oil in the tranny fluid. If I had to guess I would guess your oil pan gasket is leaking. I have had this problem in mine and it appeared as if the oil was coming off the tranny but actually isn't Also I would think this because the A-Pipe runs directly under the oil pan so any oil leaking would drip onto that causing the smoke smell. I would try changing that seal first since it is not a big job and not too expensive to replace. BTW a tip if you do replace it, no matter what people say do not use any type of sealant on the gasket. If you put sealant on the gasket it will not form a good seal and you get to do the whole thing over again.

If the brake lamp that came on is the same one that comes on with your e-brake, you should check your brake fluid.

As for oil on your exhaust, check the items above it such as the oil filter and oil press. sending unit...make sure those are tight...

1 working in a car dealership ive seen my fair shair of bad headlight switches. but the cheapest thing to do would be to start with the relay and work your way up. 3 the easiest and cheapest way to find out deffinetly whats leaking would be to clean the area and got some leak detection dye. then you can check it to see where its leaking with any kinda ultrviolet light ( blacklight etc) you can pick it up at any dodge dealership the part number is 5010042aa and runs about 7 or 8 bucks honda or other dealerships may have it as well just have to check.
