Default My How-To on Replacing a Broken Wheel Stud

I've seen a few topics where people said they broke their wheel stud. Where here is a method I used to replace my wheel stud that didn't involve removing the hub or anything, plenty of pictures also...

hey will that is good info, and that is a good easy way to replace the wheels stud. but to others doing this, be careful not to damage the threads to much as you may need to use a die to re thread the studd. instead of banging it all the way thru, tap it thru just barely, and put a lug nut on it to pull it all the way thru. air tool make this job so much easier and faster.

this technique will work on most all honda/acura cars.

I actually could have pushed it through by hand, I just had the hammer in the picture since people know hammers are for hitting.

just let me know when your wheel bearing goes to hell from pounding on it from one edge of the hub.... this may be an easy way of "fixing" a wheel stud, but its not a recommended method. at least use a c clamp to push the stud out and in. plus, altering the wheel stud isnt that great of an idea. i know a lot of ppl have done it, but its just not the proper way.

How did I pound on it? I was able to push it in with my hand, read my post about the hammer just there for the picture.

i have GSR brakes on mine, and the hub is too big. i would have to cut half the stud off (i looked) so i think i'll just have the hub pressed out, and do it the right way (and gonna replace the wheel berrings at the same time, just to make sure

I had to dremel off the rest of the broken wheel stud and punch it through the back of the hub
perhaps you didnt have to force it out too much. typically it does, and it sounds like from your wording that you had to still "punch" it out, which would damage the bearing. also, i dont recommend using your method of using the wheel nut to pull the new stud through. you shouldnt stress the stud to more than the recommended 80 ft-lbs, but you also need to make sure its fully inserted before putting a wheel on because if its not, it may move further in which makes the nut loose. you cant make sure of that without going over the recommended torque rating. or by pressing it in properly.

oh, btw, this is what happened when i did hammer my broken wheel stud out, but it was just the rear stud, which the rear wheel bearing is much easier to replace. so im only giving advice based on real experience. ive had my share of broken studs, (before i learned to apply a dab of antiseize to the studs).

It looks like a spline drive lug nut key.
