Squeaky noise in my engine either PS pump or alternator or some kind of belt/pulley
my friend and I were working on our cars today (maintenance) and we discovered a few problems... I'll start a separate thread on his car later (coolant problem..maybe head gasket?).... anyways
on my car I just did an oil change and plugs and I had the hood open and I started it up and asked my friend to look to see if anything was wrong (leaks, something loose, etc..) just to check...
we noticed a mousewheel/hamster wheel like "squeak squeak squeak" noise coming from the belts area.... I couldn't hear exactly where it was coming from so my question is..
is this something I should worry about?
has anyone ever encountered this and what was the fix.. can you help me find/isolate the problem so I can attempt to fix it... today is saturday.. so I probably won't get around to it since next weekend since I want OEM parts and the dealer parts dept is closed on Sunday....and on weekdays I work
also do those "mechanics stethoscope (sp?)" work? maybe I can isolate the direction w/ one of those.. w/ the motor running I tried putting my head/ear close to the alternator and PS pulley and could hear the noise but couldn't isolate/tell for sure where the nosie is coming from...
the thing is w/ the hood closed you can not hear the squeak.. but when you pop the hood and have your head near the belts/pulleys area.. the squeak can be heard...
I looked at the condition of the belts and they look fine.. none are cracked, frayed, etc.. the belts look to be in good condition and w/ the motor off.. they seem to be on tight....
any help on this squeaking noise would be appreciated thanks in advance for your replies...

well....my car use to do that...it was my altanator....a screw fell off....so i replace it and it stop making sqeaky noise....so i were u i check my altanator for any problems...hope that help..its ususally the altanator....
hmm its dark outside right now so I guess I'll look at it tomorrow.. if you can be more specific which screw (what direction/where is it, etc) was it on your alternator.. is it the one that tensions the belt or something else or a screw that mounts it or something... I guess it could also be the bearings on the pulleys or something... my other friend told me to try belt dressing/lubricant.....
hmm if it is the alternator itself and not just screws, belts or pulleys this gives me a good reason to upgrade to a higher output one like a stinger or something since I have a pretty large audio system...
any additional help/input would be appreciated...

Hey
was doing a search here and i was wondering what you people would think of my situation here....i have a problem when i start the car in the mornings and when its really cold outside it starts up fine but makes a high pitched whineing noise for like a few minutes but goes away once the car is up to normal operating temperatures? could this be an alternator or a belt problem???
thanks

Whining noise is different than squealing... Maybe the alternator itself?? You take a lot out of the battery starting when it's real cold (like now...) So the alternator has to work harder to recharge it for a few minutes.
I don't know how loud it is (can't hear it from here...) Maybe it's normal, but maybe it means the regulator or the diode bridge are beginning to get flaky. You could get the alternator tested if you want, or maybe park in a heated garage one night just to see if it still does it.

i had the same problem for the past two winters...my car would screech like hell whin it was started in cold temps...i figured out just recently where exactly the problem was,the a/c belt,so i just cut it off for now ...it was old and dry rotted and inbetween the ribs on the belt u could see metal flakes inbeded into the belt..hope that helps..

GSRaCeRbOI.. Wondering if you solved the squeaky noise Issue.. I'm having same problem on 2.3L Vtec after timing belt change.
