Default Carbon Fiber Trunks and roofs - INFO for those interested

I saw the discussion on the other thread, but figured that maybe this information deserved it's own thread for those people interested in this stuff...

These carbon fiber trunk lids have been in the works for months and should be done within the next month. Hopefully sooner. They are being made by FiberImages for my company Team Sol Designs. They are $600 plus shipping.

Carbon fiber roofs will get done, but I have not worked out the details yet. My initial plan is to get FiberImages to do the carbon fiber top and then get Ameripol (the company that already makes the clear del Sol roofs) to let me use their interior piece). It would end up a combined effort. FiberImages had concerns with that interior piece since it involves several bolts, but since Ameripol already invented that years ago (and I know the owner) this might work out. If FI does not make the cf piece, I have other plans.

Before people complain about the price (if you were thinking about doing that)...I've heard it all before. YES, these are expensive. I totally agree. That was the price I had to go with or these would not have been made. I had enough people expres interest and pre-pay, so we went with it. I could have gone with a cheaper company, but I wanted consistant top quality product, so that was FiberImages. YES, these are more expensive than a carbon fiber hood. Why? Because FiberImages knows that these will only sell to a very select market and that they will not sell tons of these like they would with a carbon fiber hood. Less demand makes them jack prices up. They need to cover their initial costs with developing the pieces and molds and then turn a profit. That's just the way this type of thing works unfortunately. If that price is too steep, sorry.

I will have the first of these by the end of January and will get pictures up as soon as possible. I hope to have the carbon fiber roofs done by April, since they should theoretically not be too tough to get done (if everyone cooperates).

If you are interested in one of the trunk lids, I already have 11 people who have pre-paid. Since FI has has not made that initial batch yet, the initial offering price of $600 is still in effect. After the first batch is made, the price raises to $650. If you want one, email me and we can discuss getting the money. If you wait, you can still get them, but you willpay $50 more.

Oh, about the roof weight...our Sol roofs are not actually all that light. I've had the Ameripol acrylic roofs and they are about half the weight. I figure that the carbon fiber ones will be about the same. It's basically light enough to hold easily with one hand.

For those of you that do not know me, I am the guy who started Team Sol Intl. I've been selling stuff to fellow Sol enthusiasts for years and never had a complaint or problem. You can ask around on other boards like darkSol or HondaVision if you want people to back me. I'm basically saying that I'm a trustworthy kinda guy and you should not have concerns about buying from me or pre-paying me on stuff like this. It's not like I am going to disappear.

bump for the n00b, **** moves fast around here.

classifieds and best buys seem to move a bit slower, maybe shoot a SHORTER version with a link to this thread in either.

If I had a sol, I would want a hood, roof, and trunk lid in CF.

If it was black.

Then the fenders.

Ah hell, a full CF body would kick ***

if you did have these CF parts on your car.. you know itd atract more attention on looks than it did performance... = your car is jacked.. or messed up, CF hoods.. ehh those are fine, but i mean, the whole CF car? there would be some issues. and i still think its more of a looks thing

for me it would be a weight issue and a looks issue. yes i like the look of CF, call me flashy, call me an attention ***** . but since i have a del sol VTEC, it weighs a lil more than the del sol si. i wanna get it down to the same or less than that, since my old sol was an si. with all this extra weight in my sol it has made my car slower... so ill save a few lbs here for the lbs i gained with this car. i dont know if that made any sense... but i need a drink now..

if you are doing these mods for looks dont bother, i have a cf trunk on my 94 civic coupe and it looked like ****, and i have a black car too... i did it for the weight though, i got it from fiber images also and it fit pretty well, there is a few mm raise on the driverside but its is hardly noticable. i shed 20lbs off a spot that is pretty high in the center of gravity so that was my intetion, plus my license plate and **** would always be rattling under full throttle w/ my stock trunk. now its tight. but i painted it as soon as i could, now it blends nicely w/ the stock honda emblem back on. i want to either get a cf sunroof insert or talk to fal and get a lexan type one b/c i have an ex and the weight off that sunroof bothers me.... any suggestions to getting that done?

I think it's a looks and performance thing. I personally don't like the look of unpainted carbon fiber on cars. Makes them look unfinished (in my opinion), so mine will probably be painted.

I agree that the whole carbon fiber car thing would be a bad idea and these two items certainly are not trying to do that. We've had a lot of people ask for cf fenders, but there is no point to that since the fenders do no weigh all that much. That would be purely for looks. No plans for future carbon fiber fenders or bumpers or sideskirts, so people looking for a full cf car need to look elsewhere.

At any rate, these will generate the usual weight savings, so for those who race, you are dropping half the weight on your trunk and roof. For those looking for "different" or "looks", this certainly qualifies. If a dozen people in the world have this, then it sure will grab show points for those interested in that. I guess it works boh ways depending on which way you go. I'm fairly sure that people will not pay $650 for looks, but I guess you never know.
