How did this happen to my clutch??!
So I'm driving to work this morning and the clutch on my 94 Integra LS starts grinding pretty hard when I try to shift gears.
I manage to make it to work OK, but when I tried driving home tonight, the tranny/clutch locked up completely on me and wouldn't let me get into any gear.
I end up having to get it towed to my shop and after opening her up, I find that my stock clutch looks like THIS....
What the heck?! How did THIS happen?
The metal tab got all chewed up somehow and the spring came out (that spring got stuck in the works of course, that's why I couldn't shift no more).
My mechanic said it's not uncommon to see this on my generation Integra.
Is this true?
And more importantly, how in the world does this happen??
Thanks for any info guys.
This one hurt...had to put in a new clutch asap since it's my daily driver

On my clutch, the same metal part as yours was chipped on two corners, plus a metal bracket under the spring on the other side of the disc broke right off. From my understanding, it's a pretty common thing to grenade on stock exedys.
My car started to chatter one morning and when I took it to the shop and they opened it up the throwout bearing was in several piees. Bearing only had about 12k on it. Weird stuff happens.

I just took the clutch out of my car tonight and mine looked way worse than that. All of my metal tabs were jacked up and part of the clutch disc was broken off and jammed in the pressure plate. However it had 138K miles on it and was ready to be replaced.
I had my stock clutch replaced sometime between 105k/120k... Had to have it replaced, because for about 10 days it had been getting harder and harder to shift into any gear... turns out part of my pressure plate had broken off and was wreaking havoc.
Yup...that what mine looked like only worse. Pulled mine at 100k and two of the springs had enough damage to enable to come loose. The other two had bits missing from the metal housing.
Well you gotta consider that the clutch plate go though millions of revolutions in it's lifetime...evetually it has to fail. I guess the metal housing around the springs is limiting factor for stock clutch plates.
Don't be too bummed. It looks like you needed a new clutch anyway. Besides replaceing the clutch is something that comes w/ having a manual. We all have to replace them somtime.
Good time to look into a nice performace clutch and lightweight flywheel.

i popped a spring while pushing pretty hard on a windy mountain road once.
it looked just like your clutch.
had you been pushing the car hard prior to this happening?
had about 100,000kms on it...

Thanks for all the informative posts guys.
My Integra had about 75k miles, and is a daily driver (roughly 50mi RT to work each day). I didn't drive it hard or anything since I bought it used about a year ago -- maybe the previous owner did, and it was almost time for it to go?
I typically take it pretty easy on this car. It's my CRX that I tend to wind out regularly
Thanks again for the help.

hmm ionno but my clutch went out in front of my school and when we got it home and opened it up the spring was cut in HALF!!!!!! how does this shiet happen? the clutch plate wasnt chipped or anything just the spring was cut in half!?!?!
Dude! i have a 94 LS also and the SAME exact ****** thing happened to my clutch. I kept tryin to drive mine and it tore teeth off my pressure plate and my flywheel was so uneven they couldnt resurface it. I had to get a brand new one. I just got an exedy organic racing clutch put in i love it.
working at the dealer, this lady in a 93 integra, complained of hard time getting into gear etc.....seemed fine until i tried to pull onto a main busy road, and it stalled and i couldnt get into gear, i thought i was gonna die on a test drive. lol, one of the springs in her disc totally came out.
They are very common on LS clutches.....
