cam, valves, retainer, etc....help
Something went wrong with my teg and when they did a compression test they found that my third cylinder wasn't running right so they went further in the investigation to find that my valves might be endangered. So now they have to take apart the engine to see if it's the valves or the area around the valves. Since they're going to take apart the cams, etc.. they said they won't charge me extra to replace the parts since they have to take it out anyways. So now I'm looking into buying new cams, valves, retainers, and springs. I have a 2000gsr in the process for a turbo setup. I've read the article about camshafts comparisons but i'm still confused. The question is what should i look for when i shop around for cams? What kind of cam gears should i look for also? For a turbo setup do i need a high lift, short duration, and short overlap cams? Also do cams and valve springs go hand in hand? What should i look for when getting the valve springs, retainers, and valves itself? Last but not least, is there anything i can do to cut the cost meaning is there anything i don't need to replace b/c it should be able to handle the turbo setup?
If you're gonna go FI soon, I'd get ITR or CTR cams. Anything bigger might not be so good because of the big overlap.
You can run these Cams fine with your stock valvetrain if you keep your 8200rpm Redline. However, if you want to rev higher, I should definately get the Valvesprings and Retainers.
I'm running on my stock Valvetrain with the Skunk2 Stage 1 cams and I have no problems. Pulls hard up top and runs fine because I keep the stock Redline.
