Default Crossover Wiring Question??

Speakers are Boston Pro Series 6.5 seperates:

How far is too far to place crossover from the woofer and tweeter??

Is it okay to put the crossovers under my seats and then run the speaker wires back into the doors?? (Amps are under my seats also, bolted through the floor, held into place with steel strips with the bolts cut off and welded from below, NO MORE THEFT!)

Withthe crossovers under the seats it will make the wires have to run longer to get to the woofer (in door) and especially the tweeter (top of door by mirror).

Im wondering if this is a problem, having the crossover "too far away" from the tweeter and woofer (am using a MTX 6304 4-way amp).

Old Boston speakers (RC620s) had the crossover in bottom of door, but it gets wet down there and I dont want to put these new crossovers in the same potentially wet location, for obvious reasons.

Let me know,

thanks.

great feedback, thank you.

Should I use the 12 AWG for the tweeters as well, or just for the door woofers? Theres some smaller wire that came with the speakers for the tweeters, with some small posts designed for the tweeter connections...is it okay to use that? (I would have to cut and resoder the tweeter connectors to the 12 AWG if not).

Also, (sorry, this is my first install) the speaker wire from the amp goes (from the amp: Front (-) and (+) ) to the crossover input (-) and (+)...that is right, right? (and yes, i know there is one for L and one for R.)

I was just unsure if the amp (speaker wire out) connects directly to the crossover but I guess it does? I thought the tweeters were not run through the amp, but if the crossover gets a line from the amp it seems like they would be...

Forgive my newbie virginity please.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't know about 6th gen's, but on my 5th gen EX I had room to mount the crossovers behind the console under the radio. Thats not a good description, so I'll put up a pic in a few.

huuh, no a baad idea.

THing on mine is I got so much stuff in the center console area already i dont think i can fit em there, so I was thinking under the seats right by the amps, then run the speakers wires to the doors from there.

I put the crossover in the door. First I stuck them in plastic bags then duck taped them. Ran the amp to the stock wiring harness of the stereo.

Thats how my old ones were, problem is it does get wet down there, and unless your plastic wrap job is bullet proof its only a metter of time till the crossovers go bad...

actually the shop did that job, and now one of the crossovers got wet...

I guess ill just sleep better at night knowing that my crossovers are in the car with me and not in a wet environment...especially since these Boston Pro series are so damn expensive....and also these crossovers just look to cool to wrap in plastic!

No problem at all if you use a good, heavy gauge wire. The Boston Pros are excelent speakers BTW. I have a set of 6.5 three way in the front and 5.5's in the back. Great choice!

If you are worried about getting them wet, try this. Put them in a plastic bag and fill the opening with silicone and then tie it with a rubber band and let the silicone dry overnight. Then put that into another plastic bag with the wires coming out on the opening side of the bag. Mount this to the door frame at least a few inches from the bottom with the bag pointing upside down and the wires pointing down. I have done MANY like this and after years, you can open them up and there will be no trace of moisture.

yeah, f-ing theives!

I am going to tremendous lengths to prevent another theft.

THe only thing visable from looking into the car now will be four gauges. everything else has gone stealth...yet my goal was to still be able to see these things when I drive, ie; VAFC and GReddy ProfecB...

Im making a lot of steel brackets for things and using oneway screws, its gonna take ME 20 minutes to pull stuff out, no more smash and grab with stuff outta the car in 2 or 3 minutes...they might ruin something trying to get it out but at least they wont get it out!

Seriously tho, by the time im done ill have about 200 hours into this thing.

Tomorrow the amps get WELDED into place under my seats.

Heres a couple a pictures to show the new security measures im taking...

View from the front (center console by shifter) looks like it'd pop right out, be easy to theive right?

Nnot so fast! The view from the rear, its all bolted in with steel!

Then at night, a false face covers it up so nothings there...(temp cardboard, having plastic piece made by shop)

At least its a start and will sure as hell slow the bastards down

Looks nice. But don't weld amps to the floor, you will cause a massive ground loop!

actually, steel straps, wrapped in electrical tape are "form fitted" over the top of the amps.

Then, 3/8 holes are drilled through floor, with 2" 3/8 bolts then nutted from underneath the car, then the nuts are welded on so they cant be removed.

Only way to remove amps is to cut off bolts from below with a torch, however no metal from the straps is in contact with the amps.

Didnt mean it quite literally about welding amps underneath seats. Just welding the nuts on to the bolts that are holding down the straps that are covering the amps.

Whew.

Ill post a picture tomorrow after I do it to make it clearer. And yeah, its gonna be a pain in the *** to remove my amps, but thats kinda the point.

Inorder for them to be removed from the vehicle:
1) seats have to be removed
2) car has to be put on a lift, and the bolts cut off with torch (it'd be a real bitch trying to do that with a jack!).

Unless my car gets taken they aint getting my amps again!

And im also doing what i can to prevent the outright theft of the car too. I think im okay there unless they just tow it away, but then they'll have to do that with the alarm going off.

Gotta stop the bastards!!
