Default have a few turbo related questions

What is the main cause of turbo seals to go bad?
My good friend has a Drag III Kit with a turbonetics turbo and we found oil in the charge pipe. and around the compressor blades.

Also... His downpipe bolts keep backing out. Why is this? Is there any cures for this problem?

Thanks.

Turbo seals go bad with exsessive backpressure on the compressor blades. If say he doesn't employ a BOV. I've heard that's a common occurance on the turbonetics though. Mine hasn't had that problem yet though so I don't know if it's true.

Yes, there's a BOV. Maybe it's too tight?

Cant help you with the DP bolts, but there are threads on it here.

As far as the seals go, at one time I thought that might have been due to the high oil pressure coming in from the feed line. IIRC turbos are supposed to have only 30-40 PSI of oil pressure, but if you dont use a reducer the oil pressure could get pretty high, 70-80 PSI...or whatever the average oil pressure is for a Honda motor.

EDIT: forgot to mention that this is only one thing that could be the cause of seal failures, there are other cuases for it too.

over-revving the turbo could contribute to blown seals as well.

If your not getting any smoke clouds behind you don't worry about it. My buddy and i just pulled off his intercooler and it had a good amount of oil residue in it.

Think of it this way you turbo charged a car that was never ment to be turbo charged.

Oil can be normal in the charge pipes, if it is too excessive you will see spray from your bov on the charge pipe as some pro drag racers do

It shouldn't spray anywhere if set-up properly. If it's spraying check your breather valve. Where did you run it; a catch can? If not you probably should.
