Insurance collection...?
Hey I was recently hit and went around to get estimates for the damage ... one is $790, the other is $755... Only thing damaged is my bumper, and I want a new car anyways (88-91 HB - 5 sp)
how would I collect the money? Someone told me they will mail it to the body shop that is going to do the work and other people are telling me they will send it to me to get the work done ... I can pull the rear bumper off a car in the junk yard for $50, then sell my car for around $700 and get a 5 sp civic and save the rest up for the b16 swap
but I don't know if I will get the money, anyone know about this ?

Depends on who you are with. If you file a claim, the insurance has their own adjuster who will asess (sp?) the damage and cut you a check. that is how the last two claims I had have gone.

i know they give you a check atleast in oregon they do my cuz was kit no to long ago and they sent him the check and he got to decide who he wants to work on his car so in his case he gets 1000 back and only using half.
Get some more estimates. (Insist on OEM parts when they write it up). Take the highest two or three, plus an estimate for the cost of a rental car for two days, and submit it all to the insurance company. Tell them you have not decided where or when you will have the work done. They will mail you two checks. One for the damage, and another for the rental reimbusement.
When I was hit the insurance company told me to get an estimate through one of their specified body shops I went to a few and got the highest one and sent it to them. They then found out how much it was and decided to total out my car (damages were supposedly more than the car is worth) So they gave me the option to either give up my car or give up $400 and keep my car. Well I kept my car and they sent me a check for $1700 which was more than what I paid for the car in the first place then I sold the car for $800 with a clean title
Vince, I don't get it.. why did you have to pay $400 to get your car? Thanks for the rental car idea, but it's out of question with me only being 18 - maybe I can get them for the time off work or something, who knows... so when the guy comes tomorrow, I just ask for OEM parts, show him the current estimates now ($790 and $755) which I'm guessing I will get the $755, but either way that is better than nothing... so you guys are almost a 100% sure that they will mail ME the check and not the body shop? because if this is the case I really want to get the car - but don't want to shop around yet and not have the money for it

Well when its cheaper to just give the person what the car is worth rather than fixing it they total out the car. So they give you what the car was worth before the accident. So then if they are giving you what the car was worth they take the car from you and try to get some of there money back. So with my example my car (85 CRX) was worth I guess $2100 before the accident I got backed into on the side and needed around like $2700 worth of work so obviously its better and cheaper for them to just give me the $2100 for my car than to give me the $2700 for repairs. So if they are giving me $2100 for my car they figure that they can sell it to whoever and then once again make some of there money back. So without them seeing the car they I guess just assumed they couldnt get much for so they said they would let me keep it for $400. So basically if they would have given me the $2100 and taken my car and sold it for the $400 they would be putting out the same amount of money. All it is is a way for the insurance company to pay out the least amount of money.
