Default a little tranny help

dose the main input shaft seal keep the gear oil from leaking out the release bearing? because i have a leak coming from the clutch housing and it isnt the motor. so i am asuming that it is the main input shaft seal. when i replace the seal i need to get a new bearing to right? what else should i get..and how hard is this to do i have never messes with a tranny b4...i do know that u have to split the casing but is there any thing else i should look out for?

thanks justin

Ok here it is. Remove oils seal and bearing from clutch housing. Drive in a new oild seal from the tranny side of clutch housing. Do the same with the bearing. I've never done it but just keep a clean floor and know what everything is. Honestly if you keep everything together, i would say it should take about an hour. Just use the sealant between the major housings and when you put it on have it back together in 20 minutes or less and wait 30 minutes before you put oil in it. Oil it all up before you put it back together too.

to remove the tranny housing from the clutch housing do this:

remove backup light switch
remove the cable bracket
remove tranny attaching bolts
disconnect breather tube
remove 32 mm sealing bolt
expand the snap ring on the counter shaft ball bearing and remove it from the groove using a pair of snap ring pliers (which could easily be subsitituted for needle nose pliers)
Separate the tranny housing from the clutch housing and remove sealant from mating surfaces
Remove the thrust shims and oil guide plate from the tranny housing

Hope this helps.....this is also information from the 2wd wagovan so some of it may vary but it should be the same pretty much

did you get the 32 mm (the big sucka) bolt un bolted and disconnect the snap ring which is underneath it (in the hole where the bolt went) The 32 mm bolt is on top of the tranny housing (thats if you're standing up looking down and have the engine side flat on the ground.) Don't forget to remove the oil guide plate and thrust shim from the tranny housing

so what do i have to do to take the oil plate and thrust shim out...that 18mm was the 32...and would those two keep the tranny from coming apart?

hmm, it looks like the snap ring could be holding you up. Its in the hole that your sealing bolt came out of. The oil guide plate and thrust shim won't come out til the tranny housing is disconnected from the clutch housing

u sure its the seal off the tranny and not the Rear main seal of the engine???

if u are sure then ur best bet its to take the tranny off and replace all 3 seals... the axles one and the main one....
