Removing head..anything to watch out for??
We are getting ready to pull the head on my buddies b16 due to either a bent or chipped valve. I never removed a head before and want to know if there is anything to be on the look out for. You know little hangups or tricks that some of you guys know. Its coming out of a 99 si w/b16a2. Complete 3 angle valve job, type r valvetrain, and gsr cams.
Oh yeah anyone know the torque value on the head bolts? He bought new bolts instead of studs.

i believe the headbolt torque is 66 ft/lbs...someone check me on this... umm..just make sure you have a good breaker bar to loosen the headbolts, even tho its only 66 ft/lbs, those things sometimes are a **** to loosen
Be sure to clean out the thread holes where the head bolts go. They sometimes can fill with coolant and you want to have them clean when you go to put the head on.
Buying new head bolts might be a smart idea as your old ones have been stretched. This is not a MUST but never the less a smart idea. When pulling the cam caps watch for small pins and seals (especially #3) that can be dropped or lost easily. These parts usually need to be special ordered and it would make such a small thing, a big hassle. You might look into resurfacing the head if needed and obviously a new headgasket would be in place. Keep the bottom of the head covered and turned upwards because even minor scratches could lead to leakage. Hope this helps some. -HIT
is it NECESSARY to have the head resurfaced everytime u pull it, or just when its needed? i know theres not a clear cut yes or no answer but i've been told that everytime the head is pulled, it should be resurfaced...

Well in a sense resurfacing slightly mills your head which is why some people prefer to stay away from it. I would say in a situation where the head has seen a decent amount of mileage or been swapped more then once, resurfacing would be something to really consider. Otherwise for a relativily good condition low mileage head, just clean with a soft rag and rubbing alcohol to remove any pieces of gasket that may have baked on and your ready to go. Some people have different opinions on this. -HIT

How about putting the engine to TDC? I also have to install some new cams and gears. How hard is it to change out the timing belt? I heard it was a bitch..something with the spring loaded idler?
