Default experts: oil catchcan/breather help!

got this off some website:

"Another part of this whole equation that is important to consider in this day and age is emissions legality. With the catalytic converter in place, this engine flew right through emissions testing without a glitch. Gotta love it. Another problem encountered however, is apparently a big problem on other Nissan engines as well. Only on this engine, it's exaggerated by the Total Seal rings. The engine started consuming oil at an alarming rate. On a 2 1/2 hour trip almost 1 1/2 quarts of oil were consumed. Apparently the increased vacuum created by the Total Seal rings and the higher compression were drawing oil vapor into the intake manifold via the valve cover breather hoses. The simple cure was to route those hoses into a tee fitting and run that into a remote overflow/breather tank. Oil consumption was now normal, and there was no need to worry about fuel octane dilution in the combustion chamber due to the presence of oil."

i am having the same problem with oil consumption as he is, i have Type-S pistons and total seal rings, the question is where can i get a remote overflow/breather tank, and is this the same as an oil catch can? if so how will it reduce or eliminate my excessive oil consumption, i mean its just collecting oil in the can, not returning it into the engine., i am consuming about 1 1/2 qts of oil every 150 miles..

that is mainly so boost doesnt go into your valve cover (breather port).. as for the other part dunno. my buddy had mad oil leaks when he went turbo.. he got a catch can and problem solved. so i started off with one...

oil leaks meaning the pcv hoses were leaking oil? or was he loosing oil because of oil ingestion thru the PCV?

Just take the oil out all together. Run a line from your pcv and then your crankcase vent over to the catch can. Then make sure its vented by etheir a filter or a hole in the top. This will take all the oil outta the intake all together. Now if you losing like a quart and a half then you might wanna send the oil from the can back into the block. Heres a pic of mine that just goes to the can .

i see the lines from the pcv and the vent running to the can, is there another one going back into the intake manifold? if not then it kinda defeats the whole purpose of the pcv valve. wouldnt that be bad for your engine? since there is no vacum taking out the harmful gases that circulate around the cylinder head. might as well have both vents capped off

Take your pcv valve and run a line from it to the catch can. Run another line from the catch can to your intake manifold. You dont want to cap off any of the lines, it will not allow proper ventilation of your crank case and you'll start smoking alot. In the picture you will see i have it ran this way, but i later put it back the stock way and ran one line from the breather part of the valve cover to the oil catch can. You can do it either way, the only reason i did this is because the hose i got from lowes collapsed under heat thus not allowing proper ventilation. I only had enough high temp hose from greddy to run one way.

So a line from the PVC to the catch can and another to the manifold. Or a line from the breather to the catch can and the other to the manifold. Are these the two options?

1) Line from manifold to catch can AND another line from catch can to PCV

2) Straight line from manifold to PCV (stock way) and line from breather to catch can

both ways work

For the second option, what about the other line for the catch can. Right now I have a line from the breather to the catch can and another line not going anywhere (just hanging there). I am thinking about putting it on the filter on the turbo. Is that fine? Thanks.

you can put a filter on the side not used on the catch can or just run a tube and dump it into the atmosphere underneath your car. dont put it on the filter on the turbo, you will contaminate the filter and it will become dirty.

Ah then the way I have it is fine then. Thank you very much for your answers. I was getting nervous as someone told me it was set up wrong and the line should be from the pcv and not the breather. Many thanks.

best way to do it seems to be from pcv to catchcan to manifold tho, i looked at both lines, PCV seems to be picking up more oil and the vacum is way higher there.

not crazy about that setup.. i like mine so the valve cover doenst have to "suck in air" i have mine taped into the intake before my turbo to the catch can, then from the can to the valve cover.

So line from the breather to the catch can and then another line from the catch can to the intake (not the filter) on the turbo. Is this right?

And the second option is from the PCV to the catch can and the other line from the catch can to the manifold.

I don't really understand the benefit of one way or the other. Is there a technical reason for one way or the other? Sorry not too knowledgeable on the technical aspect of the PCV or breather valve.
