Default If you engine burns oil....

is there even a need to go for oil changes????

can you simply just pour oil in??? afterall since its burning oil there must be none in there to drain anyway.........

Oh lord. Your car is only supposed to burn a very small amount of oil at high rpm's when the oil reaches all the way to the valve cover. If your car is burning so much oil that there is no more in the oil pan, you have a problem. This kind of thinking is really stupid and if you just keep adding oil, you do not deserve to drive a car.......only women and idiotic men think like this.

Hey, that never occured to me that the engine was supposed to burn oil... the question is how much is too much? I have my oil changed every 5000KM and usually find myself about a litre low at that point... I do have leaking at the valve cover (Replacing the seal this week) but not much and I've been worried that I was burning oil.

What about the oil filter? How about a really retarded approach?

Keep changing only the oil filter while adding oil instead of changing it.

Depends on what car and what you expect out of it. On my 87 VW Gti, I was adding so much oil, it could have been a 2 stroke.

Wow. I would recommend reading how an engine works. Then learn why oil is used to decrease friction which will destroy any engine. I'm not trying to sound like a *****, everyone has to learn sometime. But seriously, read…, it will make sense why you need to change oil and oil filter on a regular basis.

Well you are in H-T talking about engines so I assumed you had a question about your engine, my bad. I know a girl that didn't change her oil or filter for 3 years, just kept adding oil. When I drained the oil, it was the same texture as freshly mixed cement........think about how bad that is for your internals.

Not changing it often enough is most likely the reason it burns oil in the first place.

Thanks for the laugh!!! - I had an old school pontiac Grand AM (not that crap they make today) 455 CID factory 4 speed that used a quart of oil every 100 - 150 miles!! - did finally get the engine rebuilt!!
