Default where is your factory temp needle sitting at during regular driving?

Call me peronoid but ever since i swaped out my theromostat (got a NAPA one)
the temp needle seems to sit higher than before.

-now while driving in the WINTER my car needle is barley touching the 1/2 mark. And if it stop and go traffice.... the needle goes up pass the 1/2 mark.

-before when i had my factory one it wouldn't even sit at high even in a long *** road trip or on hot summer days.

***is this somthing i should be worried about?
-what is your needle sitting at?
-is this safe for my motor to be this hot?
---when summer gets here i'm assuming that the temp will get even hotter.
does anyone know where to get a lower temp thermostate?

My needle sat under the halfway point. It really shouldn't move past that at all. Your cooling system should be able to maintain that operating temp. You may have a hotter (opens at a higher temperature) thermostat. Are you sure your fans are kicking on? Are you losing any coolant?

what brand did you use from NAPA? When I did mine, I sprang for a TAMA (made in Japan) OE-type one. It works like clockwork...once it's goes to operating temp, I can't get it to move anywhere..even in heavy traffic in summer weather.

While I don't have anything against non-japanese parts, i've seen some pretty crappy stuff come out of misc auto-part places.

If your temp needle is high and your fan is not on yet, your problem is there. Also, make sure there are no air pockets in the cooling system.

Edit: You may want to try a different thermostat too. That one may be defective. Get a quality one.

The thermostat you got should be a 185 degree one. That's what was stock on my 92 at least. The $11 one I got at Pep Boys has worked perfectly for me. The needle sits just below the middle and doesn't move. And it could be your cooling fan isn't turning on. Check that. Could be the sensor that tells it to turn on. It should turn on when your coolant hits 200 I think. Though it may be lower than that. And yes, running hotter than it is supposed to will hurt an engine over time.

my 93 EX stays right at the center of the range. It's the original thermostat and has 251,000 miles on it so far.

P.S. genuine Honda thermostat is around 11 bucks (for a 93 Accord anyhow)
