now before the flame war starts, ive had a ZC i loved I beat a couple of V8s with it,i sold it and im gettin ready to buy another donor car for a swap.
does anyone in here have any 1/4 times for a SOHC VTEC? 1/8 times?
i ran a best 9.4 in the 1/8 with my ZC (mostly 9.7s)
i kinda want to go SOHC if the performance isnt that big a different ,cheaper, little more reliable, easier to buy used parts for.

Im gonna have to say that the SOHC with normal bolt ons doesnt compare to a healthy ZC with the same mods. I have gone up against a D16Y8 and sent him packing. His car was an SI while my hatch is a std so i did have the weight advantage. I also run a ZC trans while he was running an SI tranny. The ZC is gonna have more torque which is what helps to win races. You also dont have to wait for Crap-TEC to kick in with the ZC where at the D16Y8 is a POS before 5200 rpms or so. But like you said, the SOHC is easier to find, cheaper, easier to get parts and aftermarket support for. Turbo kits are a little easier to apply here as well. Not to mention you can pick a SOHC up for less than 500 bucks at a junkyard with very very low mileage on them since they come out of newer civics. There are many pros and cons but it all depends on what your going to do in the long run with the car that should make your decision for you.
Ya vtec is good, but i like low end power for street driving. And IMO you get more raw power w/ a zc. Unless you want to hit 5k rpm at every shift. As long as you replace most the the small stuff on a zc it will run good and last. (another thing zc parts are becoming more avalibale everyday)

Great reply, like EFsleeper said ZC has a bit more torque and from what I've seen it will take a healthy Y8/Z6 most of the days. The thing that comes into play is that the Y8/Z6 is a newer engine with more aftermarket support. Im planning to go for the Y8/Z6 hopefully by March, wish everything goes like I have it planned

Hmm I don't know, at times I wish I just went ZC because of less wiring and having to convert to OBD0-OBD1 just to get right fuel maps and timing. I got beaten by a ZC powered hatch with Si tranny but only a little bit.
My mods? Intake, custom exhaust 2 1/4", JDM D15B SOHC VTEC w/DX tranny, MSD RPM Switch with PM6 Ecu.

i threw a rod in my motor and im putting in a z6,using a6 distro, ecu and injectors and z6 manifold and rpm switch to activate vtec.
its the cheapest easiest way.
its barely gonna cost me any more than another a6.
should be done by next week.
btw id like to know where you can get a z6 for 500!
im paying 725!
btw blackzc where you at in louisville?
send me an email and ill let you check out the z6

I've beat a few zc's with my stock motor. well it had a slightly ported head. but that's it. no aftermarket header, tanabe exaust and cai. After beating a few that turned me off to getting one. I lost to some to but i was expecting to lose to all of them. for me the zc was a no thanx. but for you you really can't lose with either motor. Hopefully either will be faster than your stock motor, and you'll have fun on the street and the track. But if ABSOLUTLY had to choose i would say Dohc ZC. Generally speaking two cams are better than one. Plus the aftermarket is growing for the all mighty ZC. Good luck!
Well for me the z6 makes more since cause i drive 45miles each way to school everyday and its a newer more reliable engine thats easier and cheaper to buy and put in and service and find parts for..plus better fuel milage and emissions.
mod'n the distro is nothin..
ill upgrade to y8 distro manifold and z6 injectors and ecu later on.

Sohc VTEC. Hands down.
All the ZC's I've seen run mid 15's, with some barely breaking into the 14's with many mods.
My D16Y8, with intake and exhaust, and a p28 ecu, ran a 15.2 with severe wheelhop on my first time to the track. With a header and other minor work I'm sure I could have run in the 14's. This was on crappy dunlop tires too.
ZC's are the most overhyped motors ever. My Y8 stuck with most B18's out there, in fact I raced a teg with a B18C and he only pulled away from me at the 1000 ft. mark.

i am kinda surprise how well a "non torquey" engine pulled away from a GSR on the 300ft.. and he had a .6RT with a 2.5 RT
i say SOHC VETC screamer any day..... ZC are gettign harder to get...
