Default Clutch problem or not?

I have no clue about mechanical repair of a vehicle. I do not want to get hosed by a repair shop if I need to replace this thing.

I have a '96 Honda Accord LX (manual tranny). I have about 66,000 miles on it. I believe the clutch may be going out but not sure.

I experience the clutch pedal very loose and engaging almost at the floor, full engagement of the gear about one inch from the floor. The pedal has no resistance from about one inch (releasing pedal). The pedal sticks at about the halfway point when being released, but does release completely on its own. It is getting more difficult to get it into gear when shifting.

Due to age of the vehicle I was considering having the timing belt replaced sometime in 2003. Expect if I have a clutch problem might as well fix it at the same time, if it will make it.

Comments, thoughts???

sounds more like a leak int he hydraulic system. have the master and slave clutch cylinders checked, and check the fluid level of hte slave cylinder (its under the hood towards the back by the brake fluid resevoir, driver side near the firewall of hte car).

Master clutch fluid was low. I never have really monitoredthe brake fluid levels, just kind of take it in when I have brake issues.

Since is was a pretty sudden onset, I will monitor closely. Trying to by time until I do the timing belt.
