Default 99accord ex v6 egr fix

check enging light came on. ran a code. egr valve clogged. problem is....honda sucks nuts and won't cover the TSB because it ends at 80k miles and i have 83k.

anyone DIY? Where is it? right near TB just below it? I haven't even looked yet. How did you clean it out etc.

The best way would be to remove the intake manifold and clean out the EGR port. If it was mine I would drill it out to about 1/2".

OK, now why? is there a performance gain? do you think it is poorly designed? is this on the V6 only?

By drilling it out, you mean. Yes, I think they are poorly designed, and I would guess Honda thinks so too since they have us drill them out. (Per service bullitin #99-085.)

Drilling it out keeps it from clogging up as fast. The EGR valve controls the amount of flow.

Yea, some of us drilled them out to 1/2 inch before the bullitin came out. You have to be sure to follow the same angle as the original hole though. I don't know how much extra meat there is. It's original size is about 8mm.

Jeff -

I know with 5th gen accords you can use a thin sheet of metal over the EGR and it will trick the ECU into thinking the ECU is functioning fine. Several guys in this forum have done it. I havent. Hopefully tomorrow when more people get back to work you can get a more specific answer. The sheet of metal over the EGR is an old muscle car trick.

That wont work on a 6th gen. The ECU checks for EGR flow by watching the MAP sensor voltage. It would be kind of hard to fake that.
