Default Symptoms of a bad axle

I was driving my car about an hour ago. I did an agressive take off while making a turn. I shifted to second. My car started toi vibrate badly. I thought a wheel was going to fall off. I pulled over and check the suspension, camber kit etc with the aid of my flashlight. Wheel lugs are tight.

I had my friend drive the car slowly ~5mpg and listened as I walked/ran next to the car. I cannot hear anything. From the inside I can hear and feel a clunking. I have an ITR tranny. It is shifting fine, so I think it is ok. I am taking it to the mechanic first thing in the morning.

What do you guys and girls think?

a couple of months ago i was driving at about 80 mph, and the car started to shake really badly, i didnt know what it was. It then went away but right after the axle started to click when turning, so in my case thats what it was. best way to check axles is to go to a parking lot and turn the wheel all the way and accelerate, it's bad it'll usually click. HTH

I'm leaning towards the drive axel being in bad condition.

Lift the car up and check the passenger side axle. Look at the boot, you should be able to tell just by looking. When mine went out, when you let off the gas, it would clunk really bad. But when you were on the gas it pretty much went away

It was my driver side axle. Visually it looked fine. I took it to my mechanic, he drove it, and guess it was the drivers side. He was right.

After removing it, you could wiggle it and it would jingle. I broke something inside the boot. He did not take it off so I could see, but he needed to send back the core.

Hey, can you list the price for repair when you can find out. I'm going through the same thing! Thanks.

i'm kinda going through the same thing but not as bad yet.......everytime i accelerate hard in any gear...especially 3,4,5th gear...i get a violent shaking in the steering wheel. So far, there are no clicking noises when i turn hard, but we'll see. Been driving on this bad axel or whatever it is for the past 4 months!!! its time to replace em

It did not cost me a thing I destroyed my first axle in a clutch changing mishap.

It was replaced about 6 months ago. I destroyed the replacement, so he hooked me up with another, and did not charge for his labor. A remanufactured axle is like 100 or so. I think my mechanics labor is about 25 dollars for it. Once the part arrived it took him 15 minutes to swap them.

regular cost for doing an axle, including parts and labor is 180 a side. the actual axle is only 55 at napa, and it has a lifetime waranty, i've gone trough 5 of them and luckinly havent paid for any of the replacements, but the mechanic will generally charge for the install, i recomend learning how to do it yourself. its about a 2 hour job for a beginer but it'll save you several hundread if you learn.

I feel really good about my mechanic cause he charged me $200 to do both axles in the summer plus change over my rotors and pads, so thanks for that $180 comment
