Repairing Synchros on my 91 Crx si Tranny
My tranny grinds in 3rd gear after the car has been running for like 30 minutes.. is it possible my synchros are bad? where can i get these or at least a new tranny?
ive decided to keep my D16A6 motor and build that up. im not gonna swap im gonna try to make this bad boy run 13's in the 1/4 mile. the most i will invest is 3 grand... i guess its because i find it more impressive to make a sohc no vtec haul *** rather than just takeing the 3 grand putting a B16A and putting some i/h/e on it like all other 100000 crx owners out there.

i think you need to replace your tranny fluid
a bad syncro is a bad syncro, it will grind all the time.
go to honda, get 2 quarts of MTF. 11$ could save you a huge headache and alot of money.
my buddy had a similar problem, it would start to grind after about 30-45 minuts in 3rd and 5th.
well we drained the transmission, and about 1 shot glass worth of oil came out.
thats it.
i was amazed it was still turning...
put 2 quarts of MTF in and problem was solved.

there is a funny looking bolt on the bottom of the transmission, facing the right wheel. cant miss it. a 3/8th inch socket will fit into it
thats how you drain it, and to fill
behind the passenger side axle, there is a 17 or 19mm bolt, its directly behind it, pretty big, cant miss it.
thats how you fill it..
your gonna need a tube and a funnel to fill.
the transmission will take about 1.6-1.8ltrs of fluid but dont worry, you cant overfill the transmission.
it will just spill out if you do.
Check your clutch adjustment first. I had that problem when I first installed my new clutch. Clutch might be slightly engaged wile the clutch is disengaged. That will cause your synchro's to heat up causing that grinding after a while of driving. If your on a flat surface, leave it in gear and disengage your clutch and see if the car creeps forward. If it does, then it's the clutch adjustment. That's the little black **** next to the battery tray on your clutch cable. Try tightening that up a turn or two...... If that doesn't work change the fluid with Honda mtf.
Third gear grinds can be caused by running the wrong tranny fluid (only run Honda MTF in our cars), a worn engine mount, clutch mis-alignment, bent shifter fork, bad syncro, or any combonation of the above. start with the easy / cheap stuff: adjust the clutch, change out the fluid (get a helms manual, it will show you how), check your engine mounts (Energy Suspension makes Engine mount bushing kits and Shifter bushing kits for the EFs), If all that doesn't work, it's time to rebuild the tranny. If the shifter forks bad, you'll need to get one from honda. If the syncro is bad, hit up Mista Bone either through an IM on here or on the D-series forum http://pub143.ezboard.com/bhondadseries
he sells Syncros, he's also a guru when it comes to d-series transmissions.
One other thing, a short throw shifter will make your problem worse, if you have one, get rid of it.
Edit: stupid spelling mistakes

Yes the car does have the clutch engaging really high, also the mount on the tranny bottom end is broken and i figured since the car is cold.. the runbber is frozen due to the cold weather, when the car is running and the rubber starts moving up and down a lot it gets warmer and then the grind begins.. my friend keeps saying its the synchros.. i say ill try the cheap stuff first like the mount, the fluid, and the clutch adjustment... worse comes to worse its just a stupid 200 dollar tranny im sure i can find another one easily..
i asked on here because i hate taking just 1 persons opinion and jumping immediately to a conclusion. i rather take cheaper methods first then move on to the worst..
