Are there any tried and true turbo setups that make good HP and high reliability?
Ok, I am looking to boost my 00' Si and I've researched Forced Induction for the past year and a half. Mostly magazines like SCC and forums like H-T. And it seem the more I read, the more I get scared. I have decided that I would rather turbocharge than supercharge, but there are so many ways to turbo a car it makes me cross-eyed.
My question is stated in the subject. And for a very common car to turbocharge like my 00' Si, I have to think there would be a step by step method down to timing, fuel pressure settings, injector size, etc etc...that would be a great performer and last just as long as a stock car. Let me tell you where I am and my plans:
1. I live in Northwest Ohio. Void of import shops, tuning shops, dynos, or
anybody with any tuning knowledge.
2. Will be running stock internals, boost limit will be kept between 7-10 psi
3. My main goal is RELIABILITY, NOT HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER I CAN GET.
I would like 200-225 whp
4. I would buy a complete kit, probably a T3/T4 from a reputable maker.
5. I baby the car and it's my daily driver so it wouldn't be drag raced and
floggings would a once in a great while thing.
6. I would plan on upgrading the ignition, cooling and exhaust systems.
Am I just dreaming or can Honda-Tech come to the rescue. I've always respected the knowledge that seems to flow in this forum and would love some insight.

DARG III
Rev Hard
Max Rev
GReddy
F-Max
Those all make good power and are proven.
All so the car will be as reliable as the person maintaining it wants it to be.
If a competent person installs it then there shouldn't be any problems.

I'd recommend the GReddy kit, with the type 31 i/c, 440cc injectors, and a drive over to your local Hondata dealer. That would accomplish all of your goals, and then some. Properly tuned, you can expect 250whp and complete reliability as one customer I have has experienced.
Definatly drive to the nearest Hondata tuner, and get it tuned well. It won't be cheap but it will be good for your car.
Plus, when you first put in the kit, be prepared for bugs....but you will get them worked out eventually...it just takes time. If will help if you have access to another car when you are doing the install and if any emergencies arise.
Putting in a kit isn't that hard, but if its your first I am sure it will take awhile.

hey, I'm in Waterville OH, and am (still...
) in the process of getting my car back together. Once all is said and done we ought to get together for an occasional "flogging"
oh, btw, I've been researching and slowly building this turbo money pit for over a year now, so if you need help let me know...

i would say the greddy kit would be the most reliable cause its a mitsubishi turbo. the next choice would be revhard w/ hondata.

Those are all great suggestions, and from what I've researched thus far, I've come to the same conclusions.
Where is the closest Hondata tuner in Northwest Ohio?
Also, the bugs that occur when you first get the turbo installed. Hasn't the B16 been turbo'ed enough times that all the bugs have been worked out and you can just fix them right away?
and markarin, I'll keep you in mind if I have any questions. It's always cool to find people in your neighborhood and not cali.

For the best fitting kit,,,,Hands down the Greddy ! , You would think it was from a honda. I have installed all of the kits out there , But the Greddy is the true bolt on kit. Plus as Vaportrail said it makes good power,There is someone on this board making 300+ with the greddy. Anything above stock boost go with the 440cc's and a hondata!
The instructions are so clear, you can probably put it on yourself !

Where is the closest Hondata tuner in Northwest Ohio?
I'm from columbus, i'm getting a tech edge wideband and HONDATA and tune myslef...but...i don't think you want to do this...
Thanks for all the help, the Greddy kit seems to be what I want. Probably a T3/T4.
I used to be 100% sold on the JRSC because it seemed to be much easier, cheaper, more reliable and made power where I would use it the most, at the low end. But after reading SO MUCH about how their fuel management sucks ***, price to tune it correctly would be the same as a turbo, and how a properly sized turbo could have minimal lag with higher top end, not to mention intercooling made me do a 180.
I would really like it to be as simple as possible, that might be wishful thinking. I also don't want to do it half assed. From what I've researched, if I get a Greddy kit and a Hondata, probably a stage1 with boost option, J&S, and a Missing Link, along with a cooling system and ignition upgrade, I should be able to run pretty safe and leaving me with a healthy margin of error.
What do you think?
Also, with the Hondata. You send them your ECU with information on your setup and they program the ECU for what you have? I havn't done enough research on those to really understand them. Thanks for all the good info, I want to learn!
