help with distributor coil!!

for some reason lately, my coil has been going bad.. on a regular basis. It went bad on me once, bought a new distributor (from autozone) and then.. 3 months later, the coil goes bad on it. Found an extra coil lying around the house, slapped it on, 2 months later, it goes bad. Got the coil replaced under warranty (from autozone of course), and 4 days later, the car starts stuttering and shuts off when im at idle. Classic sign of the coil going bad.
Now my question is, why the hell am I going through so many coils. Could it be somethign else in the distributor that can be causing all these coils to go bad?? or just maybe because they are cheap autozone brands or maybe the coils can't take the high revs of a gsr motor on a highway?? . This has become quite a problem as I drive my car long distance often, and for my car to break down is not something I look forward to.

Dude...I have the same problem!!!!! I thought I'm the only one. Three times for me.
-Car shuts off while driving. Replace it with a coil from PepBoys. Runs fine.
-Distributor screw comes loose..damages the cyp sensor. So I have to get a new housing..but I keep my coil, etc. After I replace the housing and swap the parts...car runs fine for 10 mins...then shuts off. I replace it with another coil...runs fine again.
-Then recently, my dist screw comes loose once more!!! Gets caught in the leak cover. Plastic melts/fuses with rotor...not allowing the rotor to move. Car shuts off in the middle of a race. Take out the leak cover, fit the rotor back in...spins freely...and i drive home. I leave the car home for 2 weeks (had to go back to school/didn't have my timing light on me to check timing). Come back after finals...set timing...drive around..feels fine. Come back home...give one rev to 7K...car shuts off.
. I figured it was the coil....but since I'm all paranoid now...I have an extra distributor. Put that in...runs now. When the rain lets up...I'll swap in another coil (brand new from Autozone) that I have to see if it's the coil failing.
Sorry to ramble on and on...but I'm so frustrated with this thing. It's something so small but makes me wanna sell the car and get something stock. WHY IS THE COIL ALWAYS FAILING ON ME?!?!?!?!??!

When u guys are buying electrical parts, dont get it at pepboys or autozone. It has to be Acura guys...the only time i go to pepboys/autozone is if its mechanical parts...

Have you tested the coils and the power going to them. Are they getting 12 V? Also, there is a resistor that feeds the igniter inside the coil, if something is wrong with igniter it might possibly burn out that resistor? Not sure, but trying to throw out ideas.

I bought a distributor from autozone roughly 6 months ago. According to autozone, it was for a 94 civic del sol SI (DOHC), but what they really pulled out for me was really a SOHC distributor which mounts differently. Not having much of a choice since my car broke down in Houston, I just swapped out everything from that SOHC housing to the DOHC distributor housing that I had, and then just returned the core back to autozone. It ran fine for about 4 months until coils started going bad like I told you before.
What I noticed was that the SOHC distributor had the exact same internals than the DOHC, with the exception of the different housing and a different shaft. Am i correct in this?? Could the reason why my distributor is giving problems is because Im using SOHC internals?? but I highly doubt it though.
You should buy your parts at the Honda dealer. I don't even buy my wires at Autozone. All Honda parts are high quality.. it's a lesson that most learn after a year or two with their Hondas. Also, the distributor is a weak point of honda motors, so you especially should not buy distributors and/or parts at Autozone.. but I can also understand since Honda distributors cost an arm and a leg.
