Funny enough, my Father is getting remarried and is moving from Atlanta to his new Wifes house in Birmingham, I also have other family there... Not that Birmingham is a vacation hot spot or anything.
But, if we decided to go there I'd have a place for myself and a few friends to stay.
Nice looking course shot from the air, does anybody know more about it?
A.

yeah, my parents live about 3 0r 4 hours from birmingham. Might have to check there calendar and see what events they have a take a few extra days off when I go and visit my parents.
Thats all the info I seen about it in the road race forum.

Anton - so when are you coming down to the dirty South?
I have spent many a summer in Atlanta with family, we are all Yankees though, everyone relocated in there mid 80's when that city was just starting to boom.
The last ime I drove down with an R was 2 years ago when I still had the PY. We drove from Hartfort CT to Miami and stopped to see family and friends along the way in TN, GA, FL, and AL... It was quite a trip and while I actually enjoyed it my wife was ready to jump out and go rent a caddie for the rest of the trip.
I did fly down for a funeral last March and drove back with my almost new Altima, 14 hrs straight from Atlanta to Westchester, NY.
I'd love to make it down there again, maybe to Road Atlanta or Sebring but, I'd want to tow my car then. Rodney and I are planning to take an evolution school this coming February in Virginia, depending on the weather, we'll see what happens...
's all around to you Southern boys, your hospitality is Always appreciated, I hope to see you all and look forward to meeting many of you at the Expo.Enjoy the warmth, even if you guys think 50 degrees is frigid.

My prediction is that there will be no more Type-R's in 2004..... all stolen/or crashed
Thats only if the stunnas get ahold of them.
Wasnt there talk about 2004 expo being down in the dirty south? Or is it going straight back to the West coast? I just threw this out there in case there was plans for the south next year(I know kinda early)

.It looks like Trey is doing so well this year that I'm hoping he steps forward next year, too.
I would have to agree with this...
That Alabama track sill be expensive, though.

1) I think the west coast guys desrve to have the "official Expo" back for 2004.
BUT, I do have some connections to people who can get that track and I would be happy to do a "side Expo" maybe East Coast Expo or whatever for 2004. We would need to coordinate with the West coast guys as not to put them too close together but I bet we could have both.
It woudl be a matter officially sanctioning one Expo and then noting other Mini Expo events.
Now IS a good time to plan it though.
*cough* One day event @ Road America *cough*
*cough* too expensive *cough* (even for a one day, weekday event)
*cough* too much concrete *cough*

Concrete as in walls to hit if you go off....
If you're interested in driving Road America, there are clubs that hold HPDE events there, such as BMW CCA (Windy City Chapter in May, Badger Bimmers in October), PCA, etc. These events are not too hard to get into; because the track is so long (4 miles), they can put a lot of cars out in a run group without running into traffic problems, so they can let a lot of cars sign up.

Realized now thanks to Ed.
The increased fencing and barriers in the past 10-15 years, have really improved safety I'm sure. My Dad went to a national Alfa Romeo owners meet back in the mid-80s there and we came back in 2001 and he was amazed by the addition of barriers and chainlink.
I just think some increased awareness (maybe an hour or two of classroom session) and enforcement could reduce the risk of accidents even with our ITRs. The two biggest problem areas I see at RA is turn 1 and 5 which IMO have plenty of runoff for our cars. I'll stop wasting my breath anyway.... RA wont see an ITR Expo.
Ken, did any problems arise at the NSXPO in 2001?

The track management told us that this was the safest run event they had seen at the track in a long, long time.

I can't talk... I only have one HDPE under my belt, but just want to hit RA sometime soon.
R owners are too we-todd-id for a smooth running event?
Remember too that this was the fifth NSXPO, so the folks running it have a lot of previous experience at doing this. And the sixth time, NSXPO 2002, was the first one that didn't have any incidents - which is what we're all shooting for.
What it takes is the right attitude by the organizers and by the participants. No one wants to go home with a bent up car, but it's easy to forget that when you're trying to catch that car up ahead of you, and you are not thinking about how you might be right on the edge of controlling your car. That's when it's up to you, the driver, to be aware of how you're driving and to remember that the most important thing of all is not who is the fastest, but who brings his car back home without incident. And I'm sure that Trey and his team will be reinforcing this at the drivers meeting, and the instructors will in the passenger seat.

I totally agree about learning at a smaller track. Gingerman took me about 4 sessions just to remember each turn, what to do (apexing it semi-correctly) at each turn and remember braking points, and it's only a 1.88 mile track.
Happy Holidays and see you in PA.
