New Track Opening in Birmingham Alabamy
Scott, you're going to love this track. Not as fast as Road Atlanta, but lots of blind turns and some very interesting elevation changes. The asphalt is the same as what they used in Washington DC for the road course. Most importantly, no concrete walls. Of course there's also the interesting sculptures as well.
There's already a Grand Am race scheduled for May and the AMA Superbike finals as well.

Hmmm look at those huge rock/bolders
If you're scared of a few big rocks stay away from Road Atlanta and Watkins Glen. It's hard to go off at either of those places without hitting something does doesn't move too far.

While I can't speak to what NASA is doing, I can say, without giving exact numbers, that this track is probably the most expensive track in the entire Southeast area.

Expensive to rent. With the Porsche Driving School moving from Sebring and Road Atlanta to the track, the owner decided on a very high daily rate that is the same 7 days a week.
The owner has spared no expense in the building of the track. I think original estimates were around 30 million to build the place, but I've heard that he might have doubled that number. He's putting in FIA track lighting, FIA curbing, sprinkler system for the grass, and a full video system so from race control they can follow a car around the track. Even the tire walls being put in are made from NEW tires. What's really nice is that you can see a car pass in front of race control 4 times on a single lap.
Here's another aerial shot of the track.

Is that turn at the top of the photo one continuous sweeper
, or does is flatten out somewhere behind those trees?

what does it cost to rent that track?
RJ - whos thinking it would take a long time to generate enough revenue to recoup the investment unless really big events are being run there

Now if they bought thousands of brand new off the shelf tires then thats not "sparing no expense" thats being retarded.
anyway, that track looks fun!!

Hey Corey, don't forget about Rausch Creek's north course which should be opening up in 2003! That's only about 45 minutes from Carlisle. Hopefully Liberty Bell Motorsports Park and/or Alpine Motorsports will happen!
Matt
Now, the brake engineer in me sees what appears to be 5 hard braking points in 2.3 miles (kinda like, say, CMP??). Versus something like VIR with ~3 hard braking places (2 of which are UPhill) in 3+miles. I see a course hard on equiptment.
Looks fun though. And I'm 3 hours closer than I used to be.

Looks like a great track, I will have to run it somehow someday, I used to be a lot closer to more tracks when I lived in Alabama and went to Auburn(miss those days) not too long ago, went to many of the Southeastern tracks in the neighboring states, now that I am in FL it takes longer to get to them, but still not too bad, later
Some more pictures from when we visited the track. These really show the elevation changes at the track.
