Default Problems with ABS. Should I get it fixed?

Alright, I bought my car 2 yrs ago with problems with abs (never worked). When I slam on the brake, the brakes just lock up. I've been driving like this and it's not a problem, only when i slam the brakes. Now, the abs light turns on, and the electrical power seems to go weak. Then it turns off, and everything is fine. Should I get it fixed? How much am I looking to spend?

i am having the same problem as u. when i start my car, the abs module or whatever u call it in the front left when u are looking at the engine makes a loud buzzing noise, when it stops buzzing, the abs light goes on. i had a shop look at it and they just filled that resevoir w/ fluid. that worked for about a week, then the light kept coming on. i'm not sure what to do either, if it costs an arm and a leg, i can live without the abs, but the light sure is damn annoying. later

just a random question about ABS. Why do people dis-arm their abs for the winter... is it easier to slow down without ABS than with ABS in snow or something?

You can always just pull the light out, like I did.

hey same thing happens to me too. about 3 months ago the ABS light started coming on. got to a point when i turn my car on i hear the ABS motor running then it shuts off then the light goes on. i filled up the ABS resorvoir and it kinda fixed the problem for a lil bit.. but now if im driving for a long time.. like 30 minutes.. the ABS light will come on. but if its for short distances it won't go on. dunno what i should do... cuz if i bring it in to a shop they'll say they won't be able to duplicate the problem, unless i drive it for a long time before i bring it in so the light can come on...

My abs system went recently too. I turn on the car, and there is a whining noise for a minute or so and then the abs light goes on and I have no abs. I think it is the accumulator pump, but I'm thinking I might have it checked out.

Anyway, you can buy a used one, but who knows how long a used one will last. If you put on in from a newer integra, you'll have to redo all the lines. Ditto if you remove it... from what I understand. Just pull the fuse just in case it decides to kick in unexpectly when driving. This happened to a friend of a friend in his Prelude.

The "buzzing" sound you hear when you first start your car is the ABS system pressurizing. This only pertains to '94-'97 Integras, because they have a different ABS system from the '98-'01 Integras and '97 Type-Rs. The '94-'97 Integra's ABS system has a seperate brake fluid reservior (#3 in diagram). The ABS brake fluid should be bleed and flushed periodically to remove air from the system. If you hear the buzzing for more than a couple of seconds (~2-5 sec.), this is a good indication that the ABS system needs to be bleed. Now if you hear the buzzing for ~60 seconds and then it shuts off and the ABS light comes on, it means that the ABS system could not be pressurized and the ABS has been disabled. The main cause is a small rubber O-ring (#23) which seals the brake fluid ACCUMULATOR (#2) which is under extremely high pressure. If this O-ring fails brake fluid will leak out and you will see it under the ABS module.

Here is a diagram of the '94-'97 Integra ABS module:

This reason that I know about this is because the O-ring on my '94 GS-R failed after about 1 year and it was replaced under warranty. My wifes '96 Honda Odyssey also has the same ABS system and it's ABS light came on and I recently replaced the failed O-ring (which cost me ~$1.50 at my local Honda dealership).
