Depends on what you want. Sealed boxes have tighter bass, and sound more realistic, quicker response. But since you got a 12, you are probably looking for boom, so a vented box will give you more boom, with less power requirement, but more distortion at higher volumes, and also larger box size. I personally like to use bandpass box, mount them under trunk lid, and port the box through the trunk lid.

ummm.....what do you mean by that...you mean aim the ports up towards the trunk lid>???
yes I want boomy bass...but I dont want it to sound sloppy...bandpass is what I was thinking...but now from what you are saying I will get enough bass...but cleaner if I get a sealed box for it

after all of the decision making for what brand sub to get to replace my two tens I finally had my mind made up on a jl 12w3 or a 12w6..which ever I could pick up cheaper...but after hearing a friends car with one of the infinitys in it...I figure for the price these subs really put really nice sound

Yes, basically make the bandpass box, cut the hole in the ported side for the port, but don't attach the port. Mount the box under hte rear deck, then cut a hole in hte rear deck where the port hole is. Slide the port in from the top to level w/ the rear deck and mark it. Pull it back out and attach port to desired level. Seal it. Then reinstall in car and make a cover for the port hole out of MDF and grill cloth or use a speaker cover, whatever. I make my ports out of MDF and square, and round over the edges, this virtually eliminates port noise. Porting it into the car will get MUCH more sound into the car.

damm I have never heard of anything like that before...do you have a pic of what that looks like????
question is though I will get more sound in the car from that.....
would it be too much bass? I am upgrading from 2 10" rockford fosgate xlc subs....I mean they are cheap....the sq I think sucks...but for the price I had paid they worked.....so I got this infinity sub in a 12...so I would get more bass...lower freq bass than the 10's......but I dont want to end up with sloppy sounding bass
so do you say go bandpass...or go with a sealed box?

thanks in advance...glad I can get info from someone that knows his car audio

Let me put it this way. I have done a lot of these types of boxes. I used to do custom installs in one of the richest parts of San Diego (6 Million $ houses) and a lot of older guys in mercedes, porsches, etc. In Mercedes, you put a sub in hte trunk and you are lucky to hear it in the car, the trunk is sealed by some thick metal. This is where I started doing this type of box to get sound in the car. If it's too much bass, you can turn the gains down. These picky customers never complained about sound quality. And I also noticed that since there isn't a lot of air moving around the trunk, you get A LOT LESS rattles from stuff in and around the trunk area. If you download Blaubox from blaupunkts website, you can enter the parameters and try out differnt styles of boxes, sizes, etc and see the sound curve that the box will produce. I don't have any pics, they are all at the shops I left.

Too bad I don't have my Camry still, I would take some pics for you, and pics of the cover I made. I'll try to draw something and post it so it might make a little more sense.
