Default Dashboard lights don't work on my 89 Civic...

I turned the headlights on, and the entire dashboard lighting doesn't work, including the climate control lighting. The clock and radio are the only things that light up. I checked the fuse, but, its okay. What else could be wrong?

throwing any codes? Bad ground? Liquid misplacement (i.e. soda)? Burnt out back lights? It is possible if they were all put in at the same time they would go out at the same time or they could be like xmas tree lights when one goes out they all do

check the illumination switch...your dashboard lights will go out if this switch is bad...

Its not the dimmer switch. i already checked that. And no soda is ever in my car. Within the past couple weeks, when I'd be driving, sometimes the lights would all flash on and off real quick, but they always came back on, until now. Is the illumination and dimmer switch the same thing? I don't want to get confused with different terms being used. And no, there hasn't been any codes flashing.

yeah, sorry to confuse you even more...the illumination switch is the dimmer switch. I couldnt think of the right term to use at the time of my post. How did you know that its not the dimmer switch anyway? Does your dash lights work intermittently? Try taking your cluster out too and there are a couple of wires for the dash lights. Here's a site... http://www.geocities.com/twisted91ci...ap_diagram.htm
I hope this helps.

Because when I turn the switch, usually the lights will obviously go up or down. But when I turn it now, it doesn't do anything.

If you're turning it now and it's not doing anything then my friend, its broke...Try borrowing one from a friend who has one or get one from a junkyard and test it. It should be no more than $15 bux...Good luck.

Do they come on at all? I had somewhat the same problem, Only I would turn on the parking lights and the dash lights would work. If I turned on my headlights they would go of, Sometimes to come back on their on or after I messed with the headlight switch. I went to Auto zone and a new light tree (light switch) costs close to $100.00. My other options were to hit up a junk yard and possibly pay for the same problem, Or take it apart and clean it out. I went for the Diy option seeing as how I am poor and what not. If you find this to be the problem, Start by taking off the steering wheel. From there you will need to take off the round clip around the column trim. Then take off the trim. You'll have to take both the windshield wiper tree and the Headlight tree off as one piece... From there you should be able to figure it out. Rip it apart, Clean it up with some fine sand paper on all contact surfaces, And finish off with dielectric grease. Slap it back together and off you go. If you decide to do this thats on you, But if you need help let me know And I'll help the best I can... Good luck!
