My sub is messed up....rattling noise, PLEASE HELP QUICK!!!
Ok I've got 1 12" Audiobahn AlumQ12. When I turn the bass up, The sub rattles like a biotch! It sounds like its the cone or something. Anyone have any ideas? I need to get it fexed soon I cant even turn it up! Whats wrong w/ my sub?!?!
I would take the sub out of the box. It could be a blown/rubbing voice coil, seperation of the voice coil former to the spider, a seperation of the surround to the cone, or even one of the leads running to the voice coil hitting the cone. Being that you said it is very loud I would bet it is one of the first two scenarios I mentioned. You can check to see if the voice coil is rubbing by applying even pressure to the cone and pushing is down slowly. Do you feel any unnatural resistance or does it feel like something is touching/rubbing? If so, then your voice coil is kaput. If you don't feel anything out of the ordinary upon doing this then I would take the speaker out and inspect it for one of the other things mentioned.
No it cant be blown!! That would suck too much. But I always thought that when it blew, there was like no bass, Mine still hits but just w/ this noise.

id say its blown. but sometimes it only does it occasionally because the amount it hits varies with different power. My speakers would do this when they were blown. Sometimes theyd be fine. and sometimes i get that "rattling" noise we all despise so much. I finally took off the speaker cover, and discovered a gaping hole about 2 inches around the cone. Problem solved.
What is there I can do to prove for sure its blown? I mean, like, what do I look for? Im a NEWb to audio. And this is the LAST system ill buy.
I would say that its blown dude! sorry! maybe its not getting enough power! My JLs do that if the power on the battery is draining! try bigger gauge wire if you are not running 4 gauge and are running like 8
Man, you guys like to worry everyone eh? I think it migth be goood to use newbie terms and simplify things when us NEWBIES act like we r lost.... First off, it could be a number of things.... OK, one guy said check ur positvie negative connections, I say good... OK, did u build the box urself? If so, or if you cna feel air leaking out anywhere it shouldnt be... YOU NEED a new box (my subs blown, wait a sec.... nope, its the box... I have gone through 3 boxes made for a 10"....) Check for air leaks... Maybe it is blown.... If it onyl does it someitmes, odss r that it has a leak in box.... And it rattles at certain frequencies... MINE does right now... I am in the process of building a new one... SOME songs sound god like. others rattle like a bitch.... Some rattle my car too.... Check that stuff, and check back and we cna help... They like worryin ppl alot i have noticed... well stupid ppl(note: u fall into that category because you cnat tell them the rms ur sub runs at while in ur certain box and the amount each coil hits on every smote while the amp does...... u get the point)
Thats sounds exactly it. But its weird. It was fine for a couple weeks, but not now. Maybe it is the box, how do I find out? There is one hole but thats only for the wires to run through. Yea I know im supid when it comes to audio so use stupid terms for me lol. THANKS!!
OK, lousy 5 messages in 24 hours... JTCDUDEMAN here... OK.. to check for a bad seal.... Check ur box when system is on... Feel around for air blowing out.. like someone blowing into your hand... Its moving good.... That will indicate the area you have the leak... In your case, where your wires are, feel that hole... Fell the air coming out of it... Other plaes will do the same, and thats where its messed up... Its not such a bad thing where wires enter, not prefered.... But if its at a corner or where the sub sits in the hole, it will rattle the hell out of some things... Right now, mine blows air out of one of the edges where 2 boards connect... Its like a crack... The harder it hits, the more the board sways... The more air leaks.. Yes, I have screws in it even, but they dont do alot fo good always...
Ok bad news, I found out the problem....The Spyder is RIPPED from the voice coil. The sub is fucked. Oh well, maybe my warantee will cover this.
