Default Compression #'s, revisited.....

I asked about good numbers for a compression test a while back, for my H23, and one guy got 150-160's on his before turbo, and everyone else said they should be around 210 or so. i finally got around to doing a dry compression test, looking for the source of a skip, and I got the following averages outta 3 tests each cylinder:

1st - 166
2nd - 167
3rd - 175
4th - 175

Does this sound about right? Anyone got a site or something to back up the acceptable numbers?

When two cylinders side by side are low, it usually points to the head gasket as the culprit. What are the symptoms?

Are these numbers really low? What should they be?

The symptoms are since I got a new engine dropped in. I am thinking it might be plugs:

- An occasional skipping that occurs at 2/3 throttle or less, and only every few revolutions. It makes the car buck lightly, more so as I press on the throttle. Then, when I'm near WOT, all four kick in and it runs great. It goes away when I floor it. Also, it seems to do it more so when I leave my car overnight on a cold rainy night and I crank it up in the morning. I thought it might be electrical, as in wiring problems, but it will go away when floored. I have replaced my wires, dist. cap, rotor, and I thought plugs, but the shop switched those while it was in the shop, so I am thinking it might be b/c they dropped one when putting them in. I've also done the compression test, and tested the fuel press., which cam out to be a healthy 36 psi at idle. Any ideas?

usually if the #'s are within 10 of each other it's ok... 5 or less is best... anything over 10 and you might wanna check things for leaks.. such as valve components, head gasket, etc

you're fine... those are ok numbers for a higher mileage H23A.

As long as the car runs good, and the numbers stay within the 10 range of eachother, you'll be ok.
