If a block is decked 10 thousandths, will the stock dowel pin height become an issue as far as it holding up the head too high?

 

if your using head studs, then theoretically couldn't you just remove the dowels?

No, the dowels keep everything perfectly aligned. The studs fit just like the stock bolts as far as clearance is concerned. I've never had a problem with the dowels being too long, but it wouldn't hurt to take .010 off of them. It shouldn't take but a second to do.

Yeah, that's the second time i've heard of it happening but i've never run into it. I've built about 75 motors and never had the problem, must be rare...

 

that's what im thinking. theoretically speaking from what vince mentioned about the headgaskets, how LONG would you say it would take for the headgasket to blow with a dowel pin that protrudes too far up? for sake of arguement, pretend the motor is fully built, fully tuned, and boosts say 8-10psi.

 

I would say it would leak immediately, the gasket wouldn't be crushed. It really depends how much to long they are.

What's interesting is this: In any helms manual I've ever read for Hondas, the max it recommends milling the head is .040. No where does it state anything about dowel interferance. I find it hard to believe that GE or any other place decks blocks more than .020, and most heads dont need to be resurfaced more than .020 either to be straight. Just some things to think about... I suppose it is possible, but it's nothing I've ever seen before in my 6+ years. For my motor I'll be knocking a few thou off just so it's not something I have to worry about
