Default Shimming oil pump for more pressure???

Has anyone done this to theirs? I'm going to use a Type R oil pump on my b18a bottom-end. I figure if I can get the most oil to the head the better off I'll be since it is an LS/VTEC. The help of the Type R pump will be good but if I can squeaze another 10 psi or so out of it...well all the better.

Anyway, what's involved in get some more psi out of a Honda oil pump? If you have done this...how did it work for you? Do you recommend I do this for my setup?

Thanks for any input.

I was in the same boat as you when I was building my oil pump...I will tell you, don't do it. It's pretty hard to get done and keep it reliable. Basically the spring gets compressed to allow more flow...that's what I was told. A good trustworthy machine shop chould be able to do it, but a ITR will be just fine.

Your not going to get more flow from this modification....you will see more oil pressure. Oil pressure and Oil flow are two different animals.

I've seen modified oil housings that have smoothed passages to induce better oil flow through the pump, this caused some pressure loss. The pressure loss was remedied by shimming the pressure regulator spring.

Don't shim the oil pump. The one you have is strong enough. You only really need to shim if you're using the ls oil pump. If you shim with 1-2 small washers, you'll get about 7-12 psi more of oil pressure.

Also, what are the oil pressures for the oil pumps?

LS?
B16?
GSR?
Type R?

Are there any aftermarket oil pumps that flow better and produce better psi levels then OEM oil pumps???

Basically once your pressure relief valve opens in the pump (that is what the spring is holding shut) all excessive oil that is not used in the motor is returned to the oil pan. On a 1st Gen CRX the oil pump is capable of putting out three times the volume that is actually used by the engine!

If you want more flow in the engine you need to do more than shim the pump...you have to open up the holes in the bearings that control the volume to the bearings and you have to open up the oil control jet that feeds the head.

Unless your are constantly spinning your motor at 8K, you don't really need more pressure.

Not a good idea why because it does not garantee more flow...
Better get a new oil pump or a steel oil pump gear (Pro-Drive, Spoon)
and consider adding an engine oil cooler and upgrading to a High Q Synthetic

Want more ingo send me a thread...
