I need Tech Help ...what makes an engine knock ? ITR related unfortunantly ....!!
I need to know what makes an engine knock . I can hear an engine knock upon start up .
I only hear the knock when the engine is fully warmed up , the knock has become more audible ....it does not knock any other time ..only on start up ....
other wise the car drives like normal ....but gas milage has not been so great
i just got the car back from Acura because the check engine light was on , and they replaved the distributor .
what conditions result in an engine knock ....
even after duplicating the noise the dealer insisted it is normal ...first he said its the starter disconnecting from the flywheel ....insisting that the starter is under the intake manifold .....
then he kept insisting that the noise could just be the Vtec kicking in .....
this dealer has been giving me the run around ...and keeps insisting that everything is normal ....
they just seem to not want to touch it ...i dont know what else to do ...
is there anybody in the dallas area that knows a good Honda-Tech that is reasonable
i'm tired of dealing with these guys at Goodson Acura ....they are practically salesman ...they dont even touch the damn cars ....and barely know anything about them ....

Maybe the timing is advanced too far since the new distributor is installed. Let them check the ignition timing....

So, I'm right? It should be between 14 and 18 deg. 18 deg is optimal within specs...
Does it knock at all when you rev it up to about 2500? When I spun my bearings it knocked on start up, then if i reved up to about 2500 it knocked. After getting the short block replaced it now just knocks very slightly on start up and thats it... and its been almost 20k miles like that

if the timing was wrong ...wouldnt it ping ..instead of knock ?
what causes a knock .....detonation ? lack of oil ? ???

ping = knock = detonation = when the combustion is too early, could be caused by combustion by compression (low octane/high compression) or due to spark ignition (that is too early).

did the dealer remedy the situation ....did they cover it under warranty ?

well i have heard what sounded like a knock a long time ago ...but it never really happened more than once ,...and very quiet ..only til recently has it become more audible The B18C5 has a knock sensor. If it detect a knock the ECU will we-todd the ignition timing and gradually advance it back until it knocks again etc...
oic ....so is the knock sensor on my ITR not working then ?
Doesn't sound like detonation to me. If it were happening, it would be under full load, not at startup.
I think you've either got something loose under the hood that's clanging around or two parts have shifted and are making contact with each other.
If you know a Honda mechanic get him to take the little analyzer machine on a drive with you and watch the knock count. That'll tell you if the car's knocking or not.

koo ...i'll have to look into that ......
for now i think i'm gonna have to take it to a smaller dealership ...over in arlington ....the shop is small ...but at least the guys you talk to on the phone actually work on the cars .....
i jus feel liek if something is wrong with the block ...i'm gonna get screwed ...because of the bolt ons ....i jus wish i had the OEM parts ...but i bought the car the way it is ...and the owner didnt have any of the OEM parts
If your car has some bolt ons on the exhuast side, check all your gaskets. There may be a broken gasket underneath there somewhere that rattles when it's cold but seals up when the car gets hot and the exhuast expands. I had a similar problem on my header gasket.
